TORONTO - The Humiliation blanked the Gas Station Islanders 2-0, the Parkdale Hockey Lads bettered the Parkdale Porcupines 4-1 and the Beau's Beer Hack doubled up on the Jokers to the tune of 4-2 as the UUHA returned to action this past Saturday night with it's first full slate of games of the New Year. The previous night saw the Brockton Rockets secure their hold on 1st place in the league standings with a 4-3 win over the Wheatfield Souldiers at Maple Leaf Gardens.
The latest instalment of the Battle of Parkdale saw the Lads take it to the Porcupines again, this time with some help from the Humiliation, whose league-leading goaltender Luke Smit lent his puck-stopping services to the winning side. The Lads didn't hurt their chances by drafting Humiliation forward Jimmy Sioukas as a spare for the contest, either (although the recently-named Yule Log Tournament MVP managed to avoid claiming any points on this particular occasion). Lads sniper Kyle Welton had a pair of goals and a pair of assists, while linemate Tommy Gough potted a pair of 2nd-frame tallies, as well. Porcupines scoring was handled by rookie Joey Seaman, who halved the Lads lead late in the opening period. Smit made sure the other 23 shots he faced (nearly twice as many as his cross-ice counterpart saw) didn't find the twine, though, as the Lads improved their record to 6-4-2 and claimed a share of 2nd place in the standings.
The win was Smit's second of the night, having just come off the ice after shutting out the Islanders 2-0 with his regular squad. The Humiliation's Thompson brothers accounted for the scoring in that contest, with Rob converting a pass from Mike at the 4:20 mark of the 1st period, then Mike providing an insurance marker midway through the 2nd (which Paul Morris assisted on). For the Gassers, the game represented only the second time the team has been shut out this season, while the Humiliation had neither been shut out, nor served up a blanking this season prior to this one.
And despite going skate-toe-to-skate-toe with the Beau's Beer Hack for the first two periods of their game, the Jokers suffered a 3rd period lapse that saw back-up goaltender Marc Hickox solved twice before the game was put just out of reach with an empty-net goal. Hack goaltender Aaron Brophy was sharp, turning aside 15 of 17 Jokers shots, while Aaron Foster and Chris Cacciotti both finished the game with three points. Lance Moreton also tallied for the Hack, while Gary Rideout Jr. was responsible for both Jokers goals.
UUHA Regular Season action continues this coming Saturday, Jan. 13 with the 1st place Rockets taking on GSI at 7:00 pm followed by the Jokers and Humiliation at 8:00 pm. The late game will see the Porcupines and Hack face off against one another at 9:00 pm. All three matches take place at Upper Canada College.
