TORONTO - Despite heroic efforts on the part of the Gas Station, and the plucky play of the Parkdale Porcupines, the Jokers Hockey Club and the Parkdale Hockey Lads earned victories in their respective quarter-final matches this past Saturday night at Upper Canada College. In doing so, the two teams (who finished the Regular Season in the top two spots in the standings) now advance to this coming Saturday's Semifinals, where they will face off against familiar foes in the Wheatfield Souldiers and the Humiliation - the same teams they met a fortnight ago in the Winners' Bracket matches at Maple Leaf Gardens, both of which were decided by a single goal.
Aaron Foster had a pair of goals and Chris Cacciotti two assists in the Beau's Beer Hack's 7:00 pm contest vs. the Parkdale Porcupines. But the Pines were equal to the offensive task, getting a couple past veteran Hack goaltender Aaron Brophy, including the game-tying tally off the stick of speedy sniper Todd Moffat. The return of defensive stalwart Adam Thrasher helped the Quills send the game to penalty shots to determine which team would stick around for a 9:00 pm quarter-final date with the Lads. Five shooters in, the contest was decided in the Porcupines' favour with goals from both Thrasher and Moffat.
Though not billed as such, the 8:00 pm match between the Brockton Rockets and Gas Station Islanders took just over five minutes to turn into the Neven-Chartier-Boyd show as the trio of Isles combined for eight points in the 1st period, and an astounding 15 points by the end of the middle frame. (Had there been any additional scoring in the 3rd period, the league may have had to forfeit its damage deposit.) Neven alone accounted for five goals and an assist, while Chartier tallied once and earned five helpers. Boyd was credited with a quartet of assists while Nick Purdon potted GSI's other goal. Unusually short-benched, the Brockton Rockets opened, and closed, the scoring with an early goal by James Neilson and a late marker from Blaine Tynes, with Jason Pilling and Dustin Harris picking up assists.
Beau's Boys and the Brockton Brigade will take to the ice for this coming Saturday's Battle of D'Basement (scheduled for 9:00 pm at UCC) in what will be their last UUHA action for the season.
One hour's rest was put to the test as the Porcupines emerged from their dressing room at 9:00 pm to face the fresh-and-ready Lads in the first of the evening's two quarter-final matches. Kyle Welton opened the scoring just under three minutes into the game, converting a feed from Ian Seeton to solve Pines goalie Daniel Moriarity. It would be a duo the goaltender would see often over the course of the next 55 minutes as Welton would pot two more, while setting up a couple others, including Seeton's 3rd frame lamplighter. Thrasher, meanwhile, had a pair of goals and an assist but, along with Joey Seaman's game-tying 1st period goal, his efforts would prove in vain as the Lads went on to double up the Pines by a score of 6-3. Dave Ball and Eric Croussette also scored for the Lads, who are now scheduled to face the Humiliation in this coming Saturday's 8:00 pm Semifinal.
The hour-long break between games didn't seem to hamper Neven and Chartier, who got the 10:00 pm quarter-final match vs. the Jokers off to an offensive start just five minutes in, solving Jokers back-up goalie Marc Hickox along with ice-mate Cam Collyer. Jokers scoring leader Steve Levine responded in the 2nd, though, tying proceedings up unassisted at the 5:10 mark of the period. The Jokers other Steve (Chamberlain) combined with captain Ted Bisaillion and Kyle Dooley early in the 3rd period to put the Funniest Team On Ice up by one, then another when Sean Cullen found Levine on the powerplay. A further insurance marker by Levine (this time with Derek Scott assisting) put the game out of reach for the Isles, in the process punching the Jokers dance card for a 7:00 pm Semifinal rematch this coming Saturday with the Wheatfield Souldiers.
All remaining games take place at spacious and well-appointed UCC.
