GSI Grounds Rockets Despite Harris' Return While Jokers, Humiliation Defeat Hack, Souldiers

TORONTO - The Gas Station Islanders made it three-in-a-row this past Saturday night at Upper Canada College, defeating the Brockton Rockets by a score of 5-3. Meanwhile, the Jokers edged the Hack 4-3 while the Humiliation outscored and outskated the Wheatfield Souldiers to claim their second victory of the season. The score in that contest was 5-3.

Team scoring leader Steve Levine got the Jokers on the board early in the 1st period of his squad's 7:00 pm tilt with the Hack, solving goaltender Aaron Brophy unassisted. The Hack tied things up late in the frame, though, as Aaron Foster converted a feed from Louis Durand to make it 1-1. The next play saw Jokers captain Ted Bisaillion reestablish the lead for his side, combining with Steve Chamberlain for his second goal of the campaign. Additional tallies from Joel Lacoursiere and Adrian Cavan would make the difference for the Jokers, despite the woefully short-benched Hack receiving some help from a pair of late-game spares compliments of the Wheafield Souldiers. Durand kept things close with a 3rd-period marker (his second of the game) for the Hack, but the game went into the books as the second consecutive win for the Funniest Team on Ice.

Humiliation forward Jeff Hohendorf figured in on four of his squad's five goals against the Wheatfield Souldiers, lighting the lamp behind spare goaltender Gary Hong on three occasions while helping set up captain Mike Thompson's lone goal. Sean Morrison also scored for the winning side. Spare goaltender Polina Yurchenko was solid in net for the Black Wizards, turning aside 24 of 27 shots off of Souldiers sticks. Paul Scurfield, Brian Bentley and rookie Mark Jones each contributed a goal for the losing side, while Jon Weier was credited with a pair of assists.

The Brockton Rockets got the scoring monkey off their back early in the 2nd period of an up-until-then scoreless match versus the red-hot Gas Station Islanders. The Rockets first goal of the season was potted by a familiar if unlikely team member, too: perennial Rockets scoring leader Dustin Harris, whose absence over the course of the season thus far has been reflected in the squad's scoring column. Harris, who now lives outside of Toronto, solved GSI goalie Joseph Steinman with an unassisted goal at the 12:35 mark of the 2nd frame, affording the Rockets their first lead of the season. The advantage lasted just five minutes, though, as veteran Gassers Cam Collyer and John Pickernell combined to get the puck past Brockton tender Jonathan Dickson to draw even. Nick Purdon converted a Scott Adams pass just over five minutes later to give the league-leading Islanders a one-goal advantage.

The third frame saw GSI scoring leader Dominic Chartier come alive with a pair of tallies, before Michael Wilcox and Lars Dyrszka matched that effort with two more Rockets goals. But a last-minute unassisted empty-netter off of Chartier's stick sealed the deal and delivered the Gas Station Islanders their third-straight win of the season.

The UUHA enjoys another week off this coming weekend (due to a high school tournament) but is scheduled to return to action on Saturday, Nov. 12 at UCC. That night (and most Saturdays going forward) will see just four teams take to the ice for games at 8:00 and 9:00 pm at UCC. The Rockets and Souldiers are slated to face off against one another in the early contest, while the late game will feature the Hack and the Islanders.
