Shootout Decides 2022 Championship Final: Rockets Win!

TORONTO - As the clock ticked down on the final minute of the 3rd period, it appeared clear the 2022 UUHA Championship Final was headed to a shootout. Such was the balance of a game that saw the Jokers erase three Brockton Rockets leads, knotting up proceedings for the third time midway through the final frame on a plucky Steve Chamberlain marker that solved busy Brockton goaltender Jonathan Dickson on a third-attempt rebound down low.

Earlier, Dickson saw his lamp lit by Jokers captain Ted Bisaillion late in the opening frame, and by Gary Rideout Jr. midway through the 2nd. He faced 21 shots over the course of three periods, an effort that would ultimately earn him a Game Star. Dickson's cross-ice counterpart, Burke Lawrence, enjoyed a slightly lighter workout, facing just 12 scoring attempts prior to the game-deciding shootout. Of the three goals scored on Lawrence in regulation time, two came of the stick of sniper Dustin Harris, while the other was potted by Mike Daniels.

Bisaillion and Chamberlain finished the night with a goal and an assist each, while Spring Fling league MVP Steve Levine was held to just a single helper. Robert Campbell joined Harris in the multiple-point club for the Rockets, registering a pair of assists.

But it was the shootout that promised to serve as the most exciting aspect of this Final, and it didn't disappoint. The jokers, afforded the honour as the President's Cup-winning squad, elected to shoot first, sending Charlie Rishor to centre ice to get things started (as Prince's "When Doves Cry" inexplicably set the dramatic scene). Rishor scored, sending up the Rockets first shooter, Bryan Eelhart, whose attempt was also successful. Next up for the Jokers was Gary Rideout Jr. who failed to solve Dickson. James Neilson was met with the same result for the Rockets, finding a solid piece of pipe next to Lawrence's raised catcher. The pressure was on Levine to get the Jokers ahead in the shootout with a goal, but his attempt at the top right corner was deflected wide by Dickson. As the captains began to consider their potential fourth shooters, the game's leading scorer, Dustin Harris, approached centre ice and corralled the puck, considering the distance to the net relative to the mileage between Toronto and Ottawa, where he had driven in from for the game. Coming in with speed, Harris feigned left, faked right, then faded back to the left side, lifting a ringer of a shot behind Lawrence that toured the upper inner recesses of the net before exiting the other side at velocity.

As Championship game-winners go, it was a hell of a shot.

With the win, the Rockets captured their second UUHA Championship, capping off a brilliant, albeit abbreviated season and postseason, during which the team registered just a single minor penalty over the course of seven games.

Prior to the Championship Final the Humiliation and Gas Station Islanders took to the ice to contest the Consolation Final, which pitted the 5th and 6th place teams (based on Regular Season records) against one another. The final score in that one was 7-5 in favour of the Islanders, who trailed for much of the game but reversed those fortunes with four 3rd-period tallies. Dominic Chartier finished the game with 5 points (2G, 3A) while Mike Thompson lead the Black Wizards offensively, registering 4 points (1G, 3A). Sean Morrison had a hat-trick for the losing side, while Paul Morris, Stephen Cribbin and Luke Scheer all put in multi-point performances. The same was true of Gassers Nick Purdon and Eddie Belanger.

The UUHA expects to return to action at summer's end. Scheduling and logistical details will be determined over the course of the next few months.
