What do you think of the new NHL playoff format?
I like it.
Not a fan.
It's so crazy it just may work.
So long as the Leafs win, I'm okay with it.
It's going to be great watching the Leafs lose to the Blue Jackets.
How the hell did the Canadiens make it?
Boo-ya!

Jokers Edge 1st-Place Rockets to Maintain Potential President's Cup Contention

TORONTO - Steve Levine had a pair of goals and Burke Lawrence turned aside 20 of 21 shots as the Jokers eked out a tight, defensive win over the 1st-place Brockton Rockets this past Saturday night at Upper Canada College. In doing so, the Funniest Team on Ice kept themselves in the President's Cup picture with a potential shot at closing out the 2019-2020 UUHA Regular Season atop the standings.

In other UUHA action, the Wheafield Souldiers defeated the Parkdale Lads by a score of 5-2, while the Gas Station Islanders were bettered by the Humiliation to the tune of 3-1.

League scoring leader Dustin Harris was held pointless for the first time this season as the Jokers claimed their ninth win of the campaign. The victory means the team still has a shot at finishing out the Regular Season in 1st place, as they now sit in the 3rd spot in the standings, a mere point-and-a-half back of the 1st-place Rockets. The game was the last Regular Season match for the Brockton Boys (9-6-1), who must now wait to see what happens in the league's final night of pre-postseason action (scheduled for Saturday, Feb. 22 at UCC) to determine where they finish in the standings. The 2020 UUHA Playoffs commence on Saturday, Feb. 29.

Veteran Jokers forward Steve Levine galvanized his title as the team's scoring leader, potting his 10th and 11th goal of the season which, combined with his 14 assists, gives him 25 points in 13 games... and counting. Captain Ted Bisaillion, Joel Lacoursiere and defenceman Derek Thompson were all credited with assists. James Neilson had the lone goal for the Rockets with an unassisted, shorthanded effort early in the 3rd period.

In the 7:00 pm match between the Humiliation and Gas Station Islanders, it was Isles sharpshooter Dominic Chartier who was surprisingly absent from the goal-scoring column, as the Humiliation held the 2nd-place Gassers to just a single tally. Chartier did figure into the scoring, though, helping set up Jan Bourassa for his first goal of the campaign - a power-play marker scored midway through the 2nd frame taht halved the Humiliations lead. Luke Moretti tallied shortly thereafter, though, to regain the two-goal cushion for his side, putting the game in the books as a 3-1 victory. Stephen Cribbin and rookie Jeff Hohendorf also had goals for the winning side.

For the Humiliation, it was the team's fourth win in their past six games, suggesting the Black Wizards are hitting their stride heading into the Playoffs. With just one Regular Season game remaining, the Humiliation (6-9-0) can finish no higher than 5th place in the standings, however, barring some kind of uncharacteristic disciplinary meltdown, the team appears to be a lock for the Lady Malaysia trophy with by far the fewest accrued penalty minutes on the season. On the other end of the infraction spectrum is the last-place Parkdale Lads, who will face off against the Humiliation on Saturday, Feb. 22.

GSI still has a decent shot at finishing out the Regular Season in the top spot, as they trail the Rockets by a mere half point with a game in hand. The Isles' final action of the Regular Season will see them go up against the Wheatfield Souldiers on Saturday, Feb. 22. A win, a tie or even a penalty-free loss in that game would see the Islanders wrest 1st-place from the Rockets whom the Gassers bettered in their Regular Season series posting two victories in the three games.

The Wheatfield Souldiers displayed a rare offensive flurry this past Saturday night, lighting the lamp on multiple occasions as they booked a 5-2 win over the Lads. Burton's Boys managed the feat without their three leading goal scorers in the lineup, too, instead leaving the heavy lifting up to Jimmy Murphy, Mike Harkness, Shayne Stephens (2) and Grant Paley. Jason Abrams and Kyle Welton scored for the Lads, the latter potting his 14th of the season shorthanded with his team down two skaters (and, comically, a pair of Souldiers down on the ice after colliding coming over the boards on a line change).

Veteran Souldiers goaltender John Sutton claimed the win in his first game of the season, having been out of action with a series of injuries. Sutton turned aside 16 of 18 shots while Lads goaltender Luis Freitas dealt with a greater workload, facing 27 Souldiers shots over the course of three periods.

The UUHA observes a 13-day break as there are no games scheduled over the Family Day long weekend. The 2019-2020 Regular Season will wrap up on Saturday, Feb. 22 with the Gas Station Islanders and Wheatfield Souldiers taking to the ice at 7:00 pm followed by the Jokers and Beau's Beer Hack at 8:00 pm. The final game of the night will see the Humiliation and Lads face off at 9:00 pm. All three contests will transpire on the Eaton ice pad at Upper Canada College.
