What do you think of the new NHL playoff format?
I like it.
Not a fan.
It's so crazy it just may work.
So long as the Leafs win, I'm okay with it.
It's going to be great watching the Leafs lose to the Blue Jackets.
How the hell did the Canadiens make it?
Boo-ya!

Gardens Penalty Party Sees Lads, Rockets, GSI Post Wins

TORONTO -  The Brockton Rockets got off to a quick start against the Wheatfield Souldiers and held on to register a 5-2 win in the teams' last game of the season at Maple Leaf Gardens. Meanwhile, the Parkdale Lads edged the Jokers 3-2 and the Gas Station Islanders doubled up on the Beau's Beer Hack, delivering a 6-3 victory to remain in the hunt for the President's Trophy.

In stark contrast to four weekends ago when the UUHA saw a full slate of games transpire without a single penalty being called, this Saturday's matches were typified by a steady stream of players to the penalty box, particularly in the first two games which saw a combined total of 52 PIMs called. The 5:00 pm game featured an additional 22 minutes in penalties for an out-of-character total of 74 PIMs on the afternoon. Twenty of those minutes were the result of a Match penalty (10 mins) and a pair of offsetting Misconduct calls (5 mins each), which skewed the already unfortunately high total that much higher.

Mike Wilcox scored his sixth and seventh goals of the season to put the Rockets up by a pair early in the 1st period of his team's 3:00 pm matinee contest vs. the Wheatfield Souldiers. League scoring leader Dustin Harris would make it 3-0 shortly thereafter, but a late-period goal by Souldier Scott Pettus would cast a faint ray of hope upon the Burton's Boys' bench before the first horn rang. The middle frame saw the teams trade goals - Wilcox with his hat-trick effort and Rodney Merchant with his second of the season. That would be about it for any real scoring, though, as the lamp flickered late in proceedings with Harris once again winning a predictably easy footrace against an opponent old enough to be his dad for an empty-net goal with mere seconds remaining.

Next up it was the Gas Station Islanders and Beau's Beer Hack going skate toe to skate toe under the iconic dome of the storied Carleton Street hockey shrine. For the Gassers, the game represented a must-win contest if they're to maintain a shot at capturing 1st place in the standings before the Regular Season ends. The Hack, meanwhile, had their sights set on stringing together consecutive wins for the first time since early December. Spoiler alert: it didn't happen. Instead, Dominic Chartier and Courtney Stevens potted a pair of goals each, and their efforts were buttressed by Eddie Belanger and Scott Adams as the Isles rolled to a 6-3 victory over the Beau's Boys. Aaron Foster tallied twice for the losing side and Stefan Barkley added another for the Hack, who came within a pair of the Gassers midway through proceedings, but that was as close as it got.

The final game of the afternoon set saw the Jokers and Lads take to the Gardens ice with a shot at 1st place still a possibility for the Funniest Team on Ice. Veteran Lads forward Mike Frolick got the Parkdale Posse on the scoreboard first, though, combining with Tommy Gough to solve spare goaltender Randy Thuro just a minute-or-so into the game. Jeff Kassel erased that lead less than five minutes later, converting a passing play with Marc Hickox and Mike Takacs to knot things up at ones. However, Ian Seeton and Kyle Welton would conspire to pick that lock before the period was over, ultimately sending the teams for a bench breather with the score 3-1 in the Lads' favour. Kassel would tally again in the 2nd - assisted once again by Hickox and Takacs - but that would be it for goal scoring from either side as the Lads posted a 3-2 win.

The Lads' next action will transpire this coming Saturday when they take on the Wheatfield Souldiers at Upper Canada College. That game is scheduled for 8:00 pm. The 7:00 pm match features the Humiliation returning to action after a bye week, this time vs. the Gas Station Islanders. Saturday's 9:00 pm contest will see the Jokers attempt to slow the Rockets' momentum in what will be the Brockton squad's final game of the Regular Season. All other teams in action this coming weekend enjoy a game-in-hand over the first-place Rockets.
