What do you think of the new NHL playoff format?
I like it.
Not a fan.
It's so crazy it just may work.
So long as the Leafs win, I'm okay with it.
It's going to be great watching the Leafs lose to the Blue Jackets.
How the hell did the Canadiens make it?
Boo-ya!

Hack, GSI Post Wins, Humiliation Upsets Rockets for Series Lead

TORONTO - The Humiliation doubled up on the Brockton Rockets with a 4-2 win this past Saturday night at Upper Canada College, registering the only upset result on the first night of the 2020 UUHA Playoffs. (The Rockets finished the Regular Season in 2nd place, while the Humiliation - despite a strong second half of the season - went into the Playoffs in 6th place.) Saturday night also saw the Beau's Beer Hack defeat the Wheatfield Souldiers 6-3, while the Gas Station Islanders bettered the Parkdale Hockey Lads by the same score.

Islanders rookie Vincent Cardin-Tremblay completed his first UUHA post-season hat-trick with 27 seconds remaining in the game and his team already up by a pair of goals. His first tally came early in the opening frame, and his second just half a minute into the 3rd period. Dom Chartier, Jake Adam and Eddie Belanger also scored for the Gassers, who captured their first ever President's Trophy this Regular Season and are regarded by many as favourites for this year's Championship title. Kyle Welton had a pair of goals for the Lads, while Mike Ryan also lit the lamp in this first match of a two-game series. GSI need only register a tie in next Saturday's contest in order to claim the series victory, while the Lads will have to win that game and an ensuing shoot-out to come out on top.

The Humiliation jumped into the early lead in Game 1 of their two-game series with the Brockton Rockets, who are looking to defend their Championship title from last year. Sean Morrison potted a pair of 1st-period goals (both of them assisted by Paul Morris, with Mike Thompson also in on the first) while Aaron Foster's unassisted tally put the Humiliation up 3-0 heading into the middle frame. Rockets forward James Neilson combined with Bryan Eelhart early in the 2nd to chip away at the deficit, but the lead was restored at the 7:17 mark of the 3rd on a Luke Moretti insurance marker. A late goal by Mike Wilcox saw the Rockets get within two, but that's as close as the Brockton Boys got before the horn sounded. The Humiliation will be looking for a win or a tie next Saturday to move onto the 2nd round winners' side, while the Rockets will need a win and a shootout victory to do the same.

Saturday night's late game saw the Beau's Beer Hack and Wheatfield Souldiers go at it in the first match of a three-team, three-game round-robin Playoff series (that also includes the Jokers, who will make their post-season debut against the Souldiers next Saturday). Eric Toth opened the scoring just 24 seconds into the game, combining with Scott Pettus and Mike Wilk on a close-in one-timer. Hack forward Aaron Foster replied just over a minute later, though, teaming up with Louis Durand to reset proceedings at 1-1. The back-and-forth routine continued for the next few goals, with the Souldiers retaking the lead, only to have the Beau's Boys respond in kind. An ill-timed line change and a quick, follow-up defensive lapse on the Souldiers' part saw the Hack go up by a pair of goals a mere 40 seconds apart, posting a lead that was never relinquished as Burton's Boys failed to tally again. Foster finished the game with three goals and a share of the league's post-season scoring lead.

The Hack now enjoy a two-point lead in the round-robin series and will sit out next weekend as the Souldiers attempt to make up ground vs. the Jokers next Saturday. (The Hack return to action the following Saturday, March 14 at 7:00 pm vs. the Jokers.) The results of the round-robin determine seeding in the quarterfinals which will be played on Saturday, March 21 at UCC.

The 2020 UUHA Playoffs continue this coming Saturday, March 7 with the Rockets and Humiliation taking to the ice at 7:00 pm, followed by the Jokers and Souldiers at 8:00 pm. The evening's late game will see the Lads and GSI finish off their series at 9:00 pm. All three games take place at UCC.
