What do you think of the new NHL playoff format?
I like it.
Not a fan.
It's so crazy it just may work.
So long as the Leafs win, I'm okay with it.
It's going to be great watching the Leafs lose to the Blue Jackets.
How the hell did the Canadiens make it?
Boo-ya!

Rockets Regain League Lead While Lads, Souldiers Post Wins

TORONTO - The Brockton Rockets posted a 5-2 penalty-free win over the Humiliation this past Saturday night at Upper Canada College, propelling the reigning UUHA champions past the Jokers for sole possession of 1st place in the league standings. Meanwhile, the Jokers (who have a game in hand over the Rockets) dropped a 3-1 decision to the resurgent Wheatfield Souldiers, who registered their third consecutive win for the first time this season. The night also saw the Parkdale Hockey Lads rebound from last weekend's historic collapse with a decisive 8-3 victory over a short-benched Beau's Beer Hack.

Veteran Jokers power forward Mike Takacs wasted little time getting his side on the scoreboard in the team's second match-up of the season versus the Wheatfield Souldiers (the Jokers won the previous engagement 4-0), combining with teammates Tim Progosh and Craig Hughson to light the lamp behind spare goaltender Aaron Brophy (on loan from the Beau's Beer Hack). The shot, which snuck in along the right-side post mere centimetres off Brophy's outstretched pad, was the first taste of puck the goaltender experienced on the night, having missed warm-up due to weather-related traffic delays. Brophy's save percentage would improve dramatically over the remainder of the game, though, as he alternately smothered or turned aside the next 13 Jokers scoring attempt en route to the 3-1 win.

Souldiers scoring (of which there has been a relative dearth, thus far this season) was handled exclusively by the line of Eric Toth, Scott Pettus and Rodney Merchant, the three of whom combined for seven points on the evening. Defensemen Mike Wilk and Scott Montgomery were also credited with assists on Toth's first and second goal, respectively. The game also marked the return of Souldiers veteran Shayne Stephens to the team's lineup. Stephens, who was a regular with the Burton Boys for several seasons dating back to the team's origin in 1999, has made clear his intention to play more regularly having been away from the game for the past decade-or-so.

Speaking of comebacks, the Lads managed to successfully turn the page on the previous weekend's monumental collapse that saw the team squander a four-goal lead in a 6-4 loss to the aptly-named (on that night, anyway) Humiliation. Despite some nervous laughter on the bench at the end of the 1st period with the score 4-1 in the Lads' favour (the same score at the same point in the previous Saturday's game), the Parkdale Posse succeeded in thwarting a 2nd-frame push by the Beau's Boys, going on to post a decisive 8-3 victory.

The Lads had some help from a selection of spares, though, representing three other UUHA squads including a pair each of Souldiers and Humiliation skaters, and goalie Joseph Steinman of the Gas Station Islanders, who turned aside 17 of 20 Hack shots. The three that got by him were all off the stick of sniper Chris Cacciotti, who registered his 10th, 11th and 12th goals of the season, good for third place in the league scoring race. Lads forward Kyle Welton has one more lamp-lighter than Cacciotti, and it came in the 3rd period of the game. Humiliation rookie Jeff Hohendorf was named the 1st star of the game, though, as he turned in a noteworthy four-goal performance.

Despite the win, the Lads became the first team to be officially removed from contention for this season's President's Trophy, as even with consecutive penalty-free victories from this point on, they would not have enough points to catch the current 1st-place team.

The Humiliation could've used some of Hohendorf's multi-goal magic in their 9:00 pm contest versus the Brockton Rockets, which saw the reigning league champs put up a pair of goals in each of the first two periods en route to a 5-2 win. The newcomer did tally once, though, getting the Humiliation on the board with an unassisted effort five minutes into the 3rd frame. Luke Scheer would add another to halve the Rockets lead just a minute-or-so later, but league scoring leader Dustin Harris would get the final goal of the match. scoring an unassisted empty-netter with 45 seconds remaining in the game.

The 2019/20 UUHA Regular Season continues this coming Saturday, Jan. 25 with three games on the slate at UCC, beginning with the Rockets and Gas Station Islanders at 7:00 pm, followed by the Jokers and Humiliation at 8:00 pm. The 9:00 pm contest will see the Wheatfield Souldiers and Beau's Beer Hack play the rubber match of their season series which stands at one game a piece.
