Waking the Wizard: Humiliation Conjures Colossal Comeback Win With Six Unanswered Goals

A lone snare drum at centre ice served as a tribute to recently-deceased Rush drummer Neil Peart prior to Saturday's Jokers vs. Rockets game at UCC.

TORONTO - Never underestimate a sleeping wizard. That's the lesson learned by the Lads this past Saturday night as the Humiliation disappeared a 4-0 deficit en route to a 6-4 victory over their longtime Parkdale hockey rivals at Upper Canada College. The evening also saw the Jokers lay claim to sole possession of 1st place in the league standings with a decisive 5-2 win over reigning UUHA champions, the Brockton Rockets. And in an atypically-late 10:00 pm contest the Wheatfield Souldiers held on to blank the Gas Station Islanders 2-0 with goaltender Sheldon Shurland earning his first shutout of the season.

A pair of 1st-period goals just 39 seconds apart had the Jokers out to an early 2-0 lead over the Rockets on a night that, initially at least, featured the music of Rush exclusively as the between-plays soundtrack. (A lone snare drum was also set up at centre ice during the pregame warm up in tribute to Rush drummer extraordinaire Neil Peart, who died the previous day at the age of 67.) The two-goal lead didn't last long, though, as league scoring leader Dustin Harris sprung Rockets veteran Blaine Tynes near the one-minute mark of the period to halve the Jokers advantage (Scott Prudham also assisted on the goal). Perogie magnate Adrian Cavan restored the insurance marker later in the 2nd frame, though, converting a feed from captain Ted Bisaillion to solve Brockton goaltender Jonathan Dickson. Harris would return the favour before the period was over, however, lighting the lamp over Burke Lawrence's net with 54 seconds on the clock. But that would be the last goal of the game for the Rockets, as the Jokers' miserly defensive unit limited the opposing offence to three 3rd-period shots while their teammates tallied twice more (Mike Takacs and Steve Levine, specifically, who both scored unassisted and in that order).

The win was the second in-a-row for the Funniest Team on Ice, who have now potted 11 goals in their past two games after giving up just as many in the two games before that (both of them losses). For the Rockets, the loss (just their fourth of the season) ended a two-game winning streak and saw the team drop a point back of 1st place, where they remain tied with the Gas Station Islanders for 2nd.

A win, or even a tie, would've restored the soaring Islanders to top spot in the standings on Saturday night, but instead the team was dealt their second consecutive loss, this time at the hands of the Wheatfield Souldiers. With both benches full to the brim (at 14 skaters each), the shifts were short and fast throughout an opening period that saw neither team put anything up on the scoreboard. Just three minutes into the 2nd, though, Souldiers' forward Brian Bentley found linemate Kelly McCaig streaking to the front of the Gassers' net, making it 1-0 in favour of Burton's Boys. (Keven Magura picked up the other assist on that one.) The tight margin remained in place until the 6:40 mark of the 3rd, when Mike Harkness converted a passing play involving Bentley and Mike Wilk, putting his side up by a pair and setting the stage for an extended bout of six-on-five hockey as GSI swapped goaltender Joseph Steinman for the extra attacker. The gambit yielded several additional scoring chances, but Shurland was up to the task, turning aside all ten 3rd-period shots faced and all 25 on the night to claim his first shutout of the season.

With the win (their second in-a-row) the Souldiers improved to .500 on the season, while the Isles endured just their fourth loss of the campaign, and only the first in which the team failed to score a single goal.

Goal scoring was not a problem for the Parkdale Hockey Lads this past Saturday night - at least not for the first 15 minutes of their game vs. longtime rivals, the Humiliation. Nick Hehn, Fernando Freitas, Mike Frolick and Ian Seeton had each done their part in establishing a commanding 4-0 lead over their opponent, and that was just into the first minute of the 2nd period. But floodgates are called gates because they can be closed, and that is precisely what Humiliation goaltender Luke Smit did from that point on, leaving it up to the players in front of him to do something about the woeful hole the team found itself in.

And do something they did, often and over and over again, starting with captain Mike Thompson's second goal of the season, scored at the 9:35 mark of the middle frame with the assistance of Stephen Cribbin and Sean Morrison. Next up was Cribbin, who combined with Thompson and Luke Moretti to halve the Lads' lead. The 3rd period was wall-to-wall wizard, as Cribbin and Morrison both tallied to tie the game, before Paul Morris reversed the Orange Tide and Thompson tallied again for insurance. By the time the smoke cleared, the teams shook hands on one of the most stunning comebacks in UUHA history and another storied chapter in the Lads-Humiliation rivalry.

UUHA action continues this coming Saturday, Jan. 18 with the Jokers and Souldiers going at it at 7:00 pm, followed by the Beau's Beer Hack and Lads at 8:00 pm. The 9:00 pm contest will see the Rockets and Humiliation share the ice for the first time since Nov. 9, 2019 (that one ended in a lopsided 4-0 route in Brockton's favour). All three games take place on the Eaton rink at Upper Canada College's William P. Wilder Arena.
