Once, Twice, Three Times a Lads Killer: Sioukas Hattrick Extends Parkdale Losing Streak

TORONTO - It's a good thing Humiliation forward Jimmy Sioukas' gloves were well insulated this past Saturday night at Upper Canada College. Otherwise his stick may have melted as his hot hands delivered a trio of pucks into the opposing net in the Humiliation's 5-3 defeat of the Parkdale Hockey Lads.

The win was the first of the new campaign for the Humiliation, who dropped their season opener the previous weekend: a close 2-1 decision vs. the Jokers. For the Lads, the game's result represented their second straight loss of the season, and the team's 16th consecutive loss in UUHA play, factoring in five losses in the 2019 Playoffs and nine straight defeats leading up to the postseason. (The Parkdale posse did, however, taste the sweet nectar of victory during an off-season tournament in the United States.)

Ian Seeton potted a pair of the Lads' three goals this past Saturday, with team veteran Mike Frolick opening the scoring just 21 seconds into the contest. In addition to Sioukas' tallies, Humiliation forward Nicos Fassler registered his first goal of the season, as did Sean Morrison. Speedy blue-liner Andrew Blakeley picked up a pair of assists for the winning side, matching those accrued by Lads sniper Kyle Welton. Spare goaltender Joseph Steinman (on loan from the Gas Station Islanders) earned the win, turning aside 22 of 25 shots, while cross-ice counterpart Luis Freitas stopped 16 of 21 attempts.

In other UUHA action this past Saturday night, the Jokers remained perfect on the season by bettering reigning Champions, the Brockton Rockets, by a score of 4-2. A late breakaway goal off the stick of Derek Scott (followed by an empty-netter from Craig Hughson) was the difference maker as the teams appeared headed to the dressing rooms tied 2-2 with under a minute to play in the game. Dustin Harris scored twice for the Rockets while Steve Levine and Ted Bisaillion lit the other two lamps for the winning side.

And the Wheatfield Souldiers opened their season with a draw vs. the Gas Station Islanders, who had earned a win over the Lads the previous weekend. Souldiers goaltender Sheldon Shurland stopped 16 of 18 Islanders' attempts, while Jo Steinman was marginally less busy, facing just 13 shots over the course of three periods. Chuck Molgat had the first Souldiers goal, converting a second-chance rebound off a shot by rookie Grant Paley. Veteran defenceman Joey Serlin had the other Souldiers goal, while Dominic Chartier scored both of the GSI tallies. Chartier's points earned him a share of the league lead as he's currently tied with the Lads' Seeton. Both players have accrued four points in just two games.

Hilarity ensued following the game when the Lads found themselves somehow locked into their dressing room at the far end of the facility (and thus well out of earshot of any remaining staff). Calls to the front desk went unanswered before a recently departed team mate was called and ultimately came back to bust the remaining hockey players out of the joint. Had any of the Lads been forced to remain on the premises for the night they would've remained well fed, though, thanks to the generosity of Uncle Jack's Homemade Perogies, which had been awarded to the team's player of the game earlier in the evening.

UUHA action continues this coming Saturday, Oct. 5 with the Lads looking to break out of their slump vs. the Wheatfield Souldiers at 7:00 pm. The Rockets and Islanders are scheduled to take to the ice at 8:00 pm, followed by the Beau's Beer Hack and the Humiliation at 9:00. All three contests will transpire at Upper Canada College's well appointed William P. Wilder detention centre, er, arena.
