The Brockton Rockets unveiled their new red sweaters on opening night of the 2019/20 UUHA Regular Season. The white star above the front crest represents the team's first UUHA Championship title, which the Rockets claimed last season.

TORONTO - The Jokers, the Gas Station Islanders and the Brockton Rockets finished out the opening night of the 2019-20 UUHA Regular Season in the win column with victories over the Humiliation, Parkdale Hockey Lads and Beau's Beer Hack, respectively.

Jokers veteran Marc Hickox potted the first goal of the new UUHA season just six minutes into his squad's tilt with the Humiliation, converting a net-front feed from linemate Kyle Dooley. But the lead would only hold up for about a minute-and-a-half as Humiliation forward Luke Moretti combined with Nicos Fassler and captain Mike Thompson to even the score at 1-1. The fast-paced, back-and-forth action would continue for the next two periods, but the goalscoring would not as neither team seemed able to solve their opponent's goaltenders again. But with under a minute remaining in the game, unchecked Jokers forward Jeff Kassel corralled a pass from perennial spare Greg Spanovic, outwaited goaltender Luke Smit and bulged the twine behind the Humiliation keeper to give his side the late lead. The goal (which Dooley also picked up an assist on) would hold up as the Jokers marked the first win of the new UUHA season.

A similarly tight contest played out as the Gas Station Islanders and Parkdale Hockey Lads got their opener underway, with 1st-period tallies from GSI spare Herbie Barness (assisted by fellow call-up Vincent Cardin) and Lads regular Jason Abrams (set up by Fabian Ruzic and Ian Seeton). But the knot would come undone in the middle frame, and not in the Lads' favour. Barness, Dominic Chartier and Rob Yoshida would provide the go ahead goal and a pair of insurance markers (including what would turn out to be Yoshida's game-wining tally) as the Parkdale side scrambled to reestablish its defensive mojo. Roger Santos and Seeton managed to get the Lads back on track in the 3rd frame, trailing the Gassers by a single goal as the last-minute warning was issued. But an empty-net goal off the stick of Isles' blueliner Richard Switzer (assisted by Chartier) and a subsequent unassisted goal from Chartier sealed the victory with a final score that was less than indicative of the match's relative parity.

If any members of the Beau's Beer Hack were experiencing a feeling of deja vu early in the 2nd period of their opening-night match vs. the Brockton Rockets, it's no wonder. The same 2-0 score had been up on the board 15 minutes in to the two teams' previous meeting, that being last season's Championship Final. (In this instance, though, the goals had been scored by Rockets' snipers Dustin Harris and James Neilson, with assists going to John Marshall and Mario Vella.) And, just as in the previous game, the Beau's Boys managed to halve their opponent's lead midway through the final frame, this tike with Tim Bolen converting a play involving Aaron Foster and Chris Cacciotti (both of whom had, bizarrely, switched jerseys for the game). But the only difference from that point forward was that Hack goaltender Aaron Brophy prevented the Rockets from potting an insurance goal, and there was no hardware on the line this time. Final score: 2-1 in favour of the reigning Champions with Brockton goalie Jonathan Dickson picking up his first win of the new campaign.

UUHA hockey continues this coming Saturday, Sept. 28 with the Wheatfield Souldiers making their season debut vs. GSI at 8:00 pm. The Jokers are back in action at 7:00 pm, this time vs. the Rockets. And the Lads and Humiliation will both be looking for their first wins as they renew rivalries at 9:00 pm. All three tilts go down at Upper Canada College.
