Brockton Rockets, Wheatfield Souldiers, Humiliation Advance to Semi-Finals

TORONTO - The Jokers, Gas Station Islanders and Parkdale Hockey Lads were knocked out of contention for the 2019 UUHA Championship this past Saturday night after suffering losses in their Quarter-final matches at Upper Canada College.

The Brockton Rockets defeated the Jokers 4-2, the Wheatfield Souldiers tied the Gas Station Islanders 1-1, then claimed victory in a shootout, and the Humiliation blanked the Lads 4-0, handing the struggling Parkdale squad its 13th consecutive loss, in the process. The three victors will now advance to next weekend's Semi-finals, along with the 1st-place Beau's Beer Hack, who qualified for a bye to the Semis last weekend. The Hack (who earned the option to select their Semi-final opponent) opted for whichever team finished lowest in the Regular Season standings and will therefor take on the Humiliation. The other Semi-final match will see the Brockton Rockets and Wheatfield Souldiers vie for a berth in the Final.

The Jokers and the Gas Station Islanders will lock sticks this coming Saturday at 9:00 pm in the Battle of D'Basement, the winner of which goes on to face the Lads the following weekend in the Consolation Final.

Luke Moretti turned in his second consecutive two-goal performance as the Humiliation romped over the Lads 4-0 on Saturday night. The veteran forward opened the scoring midway through the 1st period, combining with Will Hewitt and Nicos Fassler to solve Parkdale keeper Luis Freitas. Moretti would double his side's lead late in the 2nd frame, this time with an unassisted, shorthanded effort. The 3rd period was barely underway when Jimmy Sioukas combined with Kelly Dutton and Glenn Gummerson to register an insurance marker. Five minutes later it was rookie Sean Morrison's turn to get in on the scoring as he converted a passing play, involving brothers Mike and Rob Thompson, into the Humiliation's second shorthanded tally of the game.

Humiliation back-up goalie Daniel Hammerle faced just 9 shots from the Lads while Freitas saw rubber on 27 occasions. With the win, the Humiliation maintained a perfect 2019 Playoffs record of 3-0-0 and have registered victories in six of their last eight games. That run of success is particularly impressive given the team finished the 2018/19 Regular Season tied for the worst team record in the league. Conversely, Saturday's game represented the 13th consecutive loss for the Lads who had previously enjoyed 1st place in the standings for the first two thirds of the campaign.

Goal scorers Blaine Tynes, Micheal Wilcox, Dustin Harris and James Neilson all helped demonstrate the offensive depth of the Brockton Rockets on Saturday night as the team doubled up on the Jokers 4-2 on their way to the Semis. Steve Levine finally got the Jokers on the board near the end of the 2nd period, bulging the twine over Jonathan Dickson's catching glove with a hard shot from the slot. But that goal, along with a dying-seconds effort from Craig Hughson, would prove too little, too late for the Funniest Team on Ice. The fact that the Jokers had spent the previous two days playing in an international hockey tournament in Montreal may have been a contributing factor to the squad's unusually short bench. The loss was the third straight of the Playoffs for the Jokers who, despite the result, managed to outshoot the Rockets by a margin of 21-14.

Goals were few but not far between in Saturday's Quarter-final featuring the Gas Station Islanders and Wheatfield Souldiers. GSI rookie Eddie Belanger got his side on the board first, redirecting a deflected attempt from John Pickernell into the open side of the Souldiers net just a minute-and-a-half into the game. Just over three minutes later, though, Souldiers defenceman Mike Wilk would have his power-play point shot redirected by Brad Sveistrup up into the net behind Isles goalie Joseph Steinman, tying things up at 1-1. And that's the way it would stay through the next two-and-a-half periods of at-times intense hockey, including two successful penalty-kills on GSI's part, and one on the Souldiers' part (with under two minutes to go in the game).

As the home team, and having finished higher in the Regular Season standings, the Souldiers opted to shoot second in the ensuing shootout. Up first for GSI was Dominic Chartier, who deftly solved Souldiers goalie Sheldon Shurland with a crisp wrister up into the top left corner of the net. Souldiers defenceman Derek Domingos then took his turn, racing in on the GSI net before letting up and roofing a successful top-corner shot of his own. The next attempt saw Shurland make the first save of the shootout, providing an opportunity for the Souldiers to take the lead, which forward Scott Pettus did not squander, putting a hard, low shot just inside the post of the GSI net. The pressure was then on Isles veteran Cam Collyer, who had to score to keep proceedings - and his team's hopes - alive. As Collyer approached, Shurland came a half stride out of the net to cut the angle down, retreated slightly and deflected Collyer's shot into the end boards, sealing the victory for Burton's Boys in the process.
