Rockets, Hack Lock Up Top Spots While Humiliation Vacates Basement With Win Over Souldiers

TORONTO - The Brockton Rockets and Beau's Beer Hack will finish the Regular Season in the top two spots in the UUHA standings, after victories this past Saturday night over the Parkdale Lads and Jokers, respectively. Meanwhile, the Humiliation pulled out of last-place with a decisive 7-3 win over the Wheatfield Souldiers.

Souldiers' forward Brad Sveistrup combined with Jimmy Murphy and Chuck Molgat to solve Humiliation back-up goaltender Dan Hammerle just three-and-a-half minutes into the opening period of the teams' 7:00 pm contest at Upper Canada College. But the Golden Boys' would only enjoy the lead for another two minutes as Humiliation winger Paul Morris quickly converted a net-front feed from rookie Sean Morrison to draw his squad even. The Humiliation followed with four more unanswered tallies off the sticks of Glen Gummerson, Mike Thompson and Morrison, whose 11th and 12 goals (the latter of which was potted short-handed) would see him move up the league scoring leaders' list with each successive period. An early 3rd period lamp-lighter from Murphy appeared to staunch the Souldiers' bleeding, but the cauterizing effect was short-lived as Jimmy Sioukas combined with Morris to pick the scab for his third goal of the campaign. Morrison would complete his technical hat-trick a couple minutes later with the help of a defender, who misfired on a clearing attempt and put the puck into his own net. Later, Eric Toth restored some degree of respectability to the visitors' side of the game sheet with a last-minute goal.

The win saw the Humiliation improve to 5-9-0 on the season, putting two points between them and the last-place Gas Station Islanders, who were idle on the night with a bye date. Despite the loss, the Souldiers (now 5-8-1) managed to pick up a bonus half point for turning in another penalty-free performance (the team's league-leading fifth of the season). Next up for the Souldiers is a date this coming weekend vs. the Lads. The Humiliation will face off against the Hack the following weekend at Maple Leaf Gardens.

The Jokers had no problems scoring goals in their 8:00 pm contest vs. the Beau's Beer Hack. Unfortunately for the Funniest Team on Ice, the Hack had an even easier time of it, lighting up back-up goaltender Marc Hickox on seven occasions to the Jokers' six. Hack forward Aaron Foster got his side on the board just a minute-and-a-half in, potting the first of four unassisted Hack tallies on the night. Joker Jeff Kassel replied three minutes later, though, solving league-leading goaltender Aaron Brophy with the help of Kyle Dooley and Derek Scott. The next five goals would be traded back and forth between the two teams, the Hack reestablishing their slim lead only to have it taken away by the Jokers time and time again. Hack captain Joseph McGinty scored his first of the season, followed by Steve Chamberlain for the Jokers. Cue Foster with his second of the game (and 12th of the season), this time on the power-play, followed by Thunder Bay phenom Mike Takacs, then McGinty again, making it 4-3 in the Beau's Boys' favour with the better part of a period still to play.

Seemingly tired of the tit-for-tat routine, Hacker Dominic Hanlon stepped up with an unassisted goal for his side (the first consecutive tally of the game for either team), then tallied again just over two minutes later, potting an apparent insurance marker, this time on the power-play with McGinty assisting. Then Chamberlain scored again, followed by another Takacs goal, getting things back within one and conjuring a ray of hope that shone down upon the Jokers bench like a luminous rabbit foot. Foster then completed his hat-trick, all but pulling the curtain on the game with a mere 52 seconds remaining on the clock. Fifty of those seconds would tick away before Steve Levine combined with Takacs and Gary Rideout Jr. to get the Jokers back within a goal, but with no time to get any closer, as the first-place Hack extended their unbeaten streak to an impressive eight games.

With the win, the Hack is guaranteed to finish out the Regular Season in either first or second place over all, and are odds-on favourites to capture their first-ever President's Trophy. The only team that could potentially knock the Hack off its current course is the Brockton Rockets, who sit a full three points back with two games remaining in the schedule for both teams.

The Rockets kept themselves in the Hack's rear-view mirror by edging the floundering Parkdale Lads 3-2 this past Saturday night, handing the once-soaring Parkdale squad its seventh consecutive loss in the process. Ian Seeton scored unassisted early in the 1st to put the Lads on the board, but Rockets scoring leader Dustin Harris combined with Bryan Eelhart late in the period to even things up. Eelhart then tallied himself deep into the middle frame (assisted by Harris) to ignite the Rockets ahead. Seeton's second of the night (and seventh on the season) drew the teams even early in the 3rd period, but Michael Wilcox would get the Brockton Boys back on top a couple minutes later with what would stand up as the game-winner and the final goal of the match.

With the win, the Rockets points total is now such that the team can finish no lower than 2nd place overall, with an outside chance of finishing in 1st place. Statistically speaking, the Hack have a better chance at maintaining 1st place than the Rockets do of capturing it, as the Beau's Boys' final two Regular Season contest are against the two teams with the worst Regular Season records thus far - namely the Humiliation and Gas Station Islanders. The Rockets, meanwhile, will face the Jokers and Souldiers in their last two matches before the playoffs commence on Saturday, March 2. Stay tuned.
