7 And 7 Is: Humiliation, Rockets Combine for 14 Goals, While Souldiers Edge GSI 4-3

TORONTO: The Humiliation and the Brockton Rockets were positively offensive this past Saturday night, combining for 14 goals in their respective victories over the Jokers (7-2) and the Parkdale Hockey Lads (7-5). Meanwhile, in one of the most high-scoring nights in recent league memory, Humiliation rookie Sean Morrison had five goals (plus an assist) and combined with linemates Mike Thompson and Luke Scheer for 14 points over the first two periods of play (there was no Humiliation scoring in the 3rd). And the Wheatfield Souldiers edged their way back into the win column with a 4-3 decision over the Gas Station Islanders.

Aaron Knight opened the scoring for the Humiliation at 7:15 of the 1st period when he combined with Glenn Gummerson to put the Humiliation up 1-0. By 3:41 of the same period, rookie Sean Morrison had scored twice to put the Humiliation up 3-0. But Jokers veteran Gary Rideout Jr. staunched the bleeding two-and-a-half minutes later, converting a Charlie Rishor set-up to solve Humiliation goaltender Luke Smit, making the score 3-1. Before period's end, though, Morrison and Thompson would spring Scheer to reestablish the three-goal lead going into the middle frame. Cue Morrison's natural hat-trick, as he lit the lamp behind Jokers goalie Burke Lawrence at the 11:17 mark, then again at 8:02 and, finally, on a successful penalty shot near period's end having been hooked off the rush on yet another breakaway attempt. Steve Levine would combine with Rishor and Tim Progosh to save a little bit of grease paint late in the 3rd, but when the dust settled the match went into the books as a lopsided victory for the Humiliation and a resounding notice that a new sheriff had arrived at the Double-U corral.

Morrison's five-goal performance fell just shy of tying the UUHA's single-game scoring record set on April 17, 2010 by Eric Toth of the Wheatfield Souldiers. Toth's six-goal performance occurred in the first-ever UUHA Championship Final which saw the Souldiers defeat the Jokers 8-5. His handiwork that night contributed to another UUHA record for most points in a game by a line, as Toth, along with wingers Jimmy Murphy and Chuck Molgat, combined for a total of 17 points - just a goal and two assists off the 14-points accrued by Morrison, Thompson and Scheer.

Goaltenders Luis Freitas and Jonathan Dickson would've been well advised to apply sunscreen prior to their teams' 9:00 pm contest this past Saturday night, as the 1st-place Parkdale Hockey Lads and 2nd-place Brockton Rockets combined for a total of 12 lamplighters on the night. Mike Daniels, Blaine Tynes, Bryan Eelhart, Daniel Wilcox and James Neilson all scored for the Rockets (Wilcox and Eelhart with a pair each), while the majority of Lads scoring was left up to spares Mike Thompson (3) and Sean Morrison, both of whom were on loan from the Humiliation. Veteran Lads forward Simon Evers potted the first Lads goal of the game, giving him two tallies in just four games so far this season. Still, it wasn't enough to counter the Rockets' offence as the Brockton Boys went on to post a 7-5 win. The victory was the Rockets' fifth win in their last six games, putting them just a point-and-a-half behind the league-leading Lads. For their part, after rewriting the UUHA record books with seven straight wins, the Lads have now dropped their last two contests being outscored 12-7 in the process.

Next up for the Lads is a Maple Leaf Gardens date vs. the Islanders on the afternoon of Dec. 22, while the Rockets are set to face off against the Humiliation this coming Saturday, Dec. 15 at UCC. The puck drops on that one at 9:00 pm.

The Gas Station Islanders' losing streak continued unabated this past Saturday night as the team dropped it's seventh consecutive decision, this time to the resurgent Wheatfield Souldiers. And as has been the case with all but three of the nine games the team has played this season, this one would end with a one-goal margin as the Souldiers skated to a 4-3 win. Keven Magura, Brad Sveistrup, Rodney Merchant and Chuck Molgat each scored for Burton's Boys (including a pair of power-play markers) while GSI's Cam Collyer (2) and Eddie Belanger tallied for the Isles. John Sutton stopped 16 of 19 shots for his third win of the campaign, while cross-ice counterpart Joseph Steinman made 20 saves on 24 Souldiers' attempts. Since opening the season with four straight losses, the reigning league Champions have won four of their last five. The team seems to have rediscovered its scoring touch, too, potting a total of 19 goals in those victories (compared to a woeful solitary goal in the team's first four matches of the season).

The Souldiers are scheduled to return to action this coming Saturday, Dec. 15 at UCC where they'll go up against the Beau's Beer Hack. Currently sitting in 3rd place in the standings with a respectable 5-2-1 record, the Hack have lost just one of their last six games. They edged the Souldiers 2-1 in their only previous meeting this season back on October 13.
