TORONTO - The Lads' incredible seven-game winning streak is over, after the soaring 1st-place team dropped a 5-2 decision to the Jokers this past Saturday night at Upper Canada College. Also Saturday night, the Beau's Beer Hack edged the Brockton Rockets 2-1 to claim sole possession of 2nd place in the UUHA standings.
Veteran Hack forward Aaron Foster combined with Chris and Stefan Barkley just four minutes into the opening frame to put the Beau's Boys up 1-0 in a game that would see the winner either take or retain 2nd place overall in the league standings. For most of the match, despite consistently outshooting their opponent, the Rockets found themselves in catch-up mode chasing the single goal deficit. But with 4:40 on the 3rd period clock, and with the Hack shorthanded due to a hooking infraction, Rockets scoring leader Dustin Harris made good on a play involving Daniel Wilcox and James Neilson to pot his second power-play goal of the campaign, drawing his team even in the process. The celebration on the Rockets bench would be short-lived, though, as just a minute-and-change later Foster found Chris Barkley on his way to the Brockton net where he coaxed the puck past goaltender Jonathan Dickson to retain the lead. The next three-and-a-half minutes saw plenty of Rockets offence (they were back on the power-play for two minutes of it) but no additional scoring as goalie Aaron Brophy held the Hack line (earning 2nd Star of the Game honours as a result).
The Beau's Beer Hack's next action will take place Saturday, Dec. 15 when they face off against the Wheatfield Souldiers at UCC. The Rockets, meanwhile, will have another shot at reclaiming 2nd place this coming Saturday, Dec. 8 when they go up against the Lads. The puck drop on that one is scheduled for 9:00 pm at UCC.
The Jokers went up early and often in the first 15 minutes-or-so of their contest with the unbeaten Parkdale Lads on Saturday night. Gary Rideout Jr. solved Lads goalie Luis Freitas just 90 seconds into the game, combining with Kyle Dooley and Derek Thompson for just his second goal of the season. Charlie Rishor made it 2-0 Jokers five minutes later, this time with Rideout and Mike Takacs picking up assists. Then, on the first shift of the 2nd period, Derek Scott got the monkey off his back with help from Thompson and Joel Lacoursiere, putting the Funniest Team on Ice up 3-0 over the Winningest Team of the Season thus far. Lads superstar Kyle Welton would activate in the 3rd, though, teaming up with usual suspect Ian Seeton (2), Fabian Ruzic and Dave Ball to shatter Burke Lawrence's shutout dreams with a power-play tally and an even-strengthed goal just over five minutes apart. However, Scott's second of the game (assisted by Thompson and Sean Cullen) would bisect those Lads' markers to maintain a healthy cushion for the Jokers. Scott then completed the hat-trick with a classic buzzer-beater (one second remaining on the clock) and the Lads net empty for the extra attacker.
Next up for the Jokers is the Humiliation with whom they'll face off this coming Saturday, Dec. 8 at 8:00 pm. The Gas Station Islanders and Wheatfield Souldiers will return to action this coming Saturday as well, taking to the UCC ice at 7:00 pm. Lads and Rockets will close things out with the late game.
