Lads, Jokers, Souldiers Draw First Blood as Beau's Boys Upset Humiliation

TORONTO - In a pivotal scene from the film Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, the hero sips from a cup he believes to be the Holy Grail. An ancient knight then affirms his decision saying, "You have chosen wisely." For the Lads, Jokers and Wheatfield Souldiers, those same words appear to have rung true on opening night of the 2018 UUHA Playoffs, as the three teams rolled over their selected opponents by a combined score of 15-5. (This is the league's first post-season in which the top teams chose their opening-round opponent - see Pick Your Opponent article below.) For the Humiliation vs. Beau's Beer Hack series, however, the skate was on the other foot, as the 5th-place Hack edged the 4th-place Humiliation 2-1 in their opening game.

In fairness, the Humiliation didn't choose the Hack as their opponent so much as they were paired with Beau's Boys after the three higher finishing teams had made their selections. On this night, the arranged marriage got off to a rocky start for the Humiliation as veteran Hacker Stefan Barkley put his side up 1-0 with an unassisted power-play tally late in the opening frame. Regular Season league scoring leader Aaron Foster made it 2-0 late in the 2nd (with Chris Barkley assisting), but the Humiliation managed to halve that lead two-and-a-half minutes later when Luke Scheer converted a set up involving Mike Thompson and Alex Hewitt to get one past Hack goalie Aaron Brophy. The defensive battles would continue through to the final buzzer as the Hack held on to collect 2 points in the two-game, first-to-three-points series. The two teams will settle things at 7:00 pm this coming Saturday, March 3 at Upper Canada College. To win the series, the Humiliation will need to win that game and an ensuing shootout. The Hack need only tie the game to go through on the winners' side.

That same situation applies to the Lads, Jokers and Souldiers, who defeated the Islanders, Rockets and Porcupines (respectively) this past Saturday night, each by three or more goals. For the Lads, the mad skills of forwards Ian Seeton and Kyle Welton were once again on display as the pair combined for a pair of points each in their team's 4-1 victory over GSI. But half of the Lads' goals didn't even involve that dynamic duo. Rather, Jason Abrams earned 1st-star honours with a goal and two assists, while Fabian Ruzic was credited with a pair of helpers, as well. Veteran Lads defenceman Nick Hehn contributed with a solid slapshot from the point that bulged the twine behind Isles' goaltender Joe Steinman late in the middle frame. Dominic Chartier spoiled Lads goaltender Luis Freitas' shutout bid at 6:21 of the 3rd period, but that was the only tally GSI would register.

For the Jokers, it was another episode of the Rideout and Levine show as those two combined for seven points, figuring in on the team's first four scoring plays. Levine finished the night with a hat-trick while Rideout earned a goal and three helpers. Adrian Cavan and Derek Scott accounted for the other two Jokers' goals, while assists were awarded to Joel Lacoursiere, Craig Hughson (2) and Mike Takacs. Goaltender Burke Larence was solid between the pipes, turning aside 19 of 21 shots off of Rockets' sticks. Dustin Harris and Michael Wilcox scored for the Rockets, while Blaine Tynes and Bryan Eelhart claimed assists.

Wheatfield Souldiers forward Scott Pettus got Burton's Boys on the board early in their game vs. the Parkdale Porcupines, converting a feed from Jimmy Murphy just a minute and 12 seconds into the game. Mike Harkness made it 2-0 (with Kelly McCaig assisting) seven minutes later, but the Pines' Elias Vastis one-timed a pass from Adam Valente to halve the lead before period's end. Todd Moffat then tied the game with a quick goal off the faceoff early in the 2nd period (Vastis got the assist on that one), but it was all Souldiers from that point on, beginning with a go-ahead tally from Joey Serlin and another off-the-faceoff tally, this time potted on the power-play by McCaig. Eric Toth added some additional insurance late in the 3rd as the Souldiers turned the tables on the Pines, who had defeated the Souldiers in Game 1 of the two teams' opening series in last year's playoffs. To move on as series winners, the Porcupines will now have to what the Souldiers did last year: win Game 2, and then better their opponent in a shootout.

The deciding games of the opening round of the 2018 UUHA Playoffs get underway this coming Saturday, March 3 at UCC with the Humiliation and Hack at 7:00 pm, followed by the Souldiers and Porcupines and 8:00 pm. The Jokers and Rockets take to the ice at 9:00 pm while the President's Cup-winning Lads will face off against the Islanders at 10:00 pm.
