Jokers' Buzzer Beater Earns Gold Medal Game Berth

TORONTO - The Jokers Hockey Club has advanced to the Gold Medal game of the 2011 UUHA Playoffs. They will face off against the Wheatfield Souldiers in what amounts to a rematch of last year's Championship game. The Gas Station Islanders, meanwhile, will compete in the Bronze Medal Game against the Parkdale Hockey Lads. The Humiliation, who, despite a strong end push that saw the team tie the Jokers 3-3, finished this past Saturday's three-team playoff round-robin in third place. As such, the team will not participate in this year's Medal Round.

Islanders forward George Collins opened the scoring barely two minutes into the first contest of the night's UUHA Playoff action, slipping the puck past Humiliation goaltender Chris Sanagan on an otherwise innocent looking play. Humiliation forward Paul Aucoin evened things up four minutes later, converting a pass from linemate Mike Thompson. GSI forwards Clint Davies and Dominic Chartier conspired to give the blue side a two-goal advantage by the 13-minute mark of the second frame, before veteran Humiliation sniper Luke Moretti made good on a Joe Cook feed to draw his squad within one. That, however, is as close as the Orange Tide would get, as GSI retired to their dressing room with the win and the resulting two-point advantage. (Isles players Kevin Lacroix, Dave Bidini and Dylan Hudecki collected Game 1 assists while Cam Collyer was credited with a pair of helpers.)

Undaunted, the Humiliation came out firing on all cylinders for Game 2, notching a pair of unanswered tallies against the Jokers. The first one was scored by winger Paul Morris with Cook and Moretti drawing assists. The second was netted unassisted by Mike Thompson, who was left unchecked during a goal-mouth scramble in front of sprawled Jokers goaltender Burke Lawrence.

Jokers captain Ted Bisaillion got his squad on the board a few minutes later, making good on a tidy passing play by Craig Hughson and Paul Irving. Then it was Jokers offensive leader Steve Levine's turn to shine as he converted helpers from Mike Takacs, Steve Chamberlain and Pete Windrem for a pair of goals, putting his team ahead in the process. But with just over a minute to play, and with the Humiliation net empty for the extra attacker, Moretti responded to teammate Stephen Cribbin's curious motivational calls of "Fifty bucks!" and buried what would stand up as the game-tying goal. Having not taken a single penalty, though, the Jokers earned a half-point advantage in the contest, thus sealing their opponents fate for the night, and the post-season.

The final contest of the evening would therefor decide which of the two remaining teams would go on to a shot at the league Championship, and which would play for pride in the following weekend's Bronze Medal game.

GSI forward Steven Boyd made good on a pass from Pim Van der Toorn less than 40 seconds into the game to put the Isles up by one. But plucky Jokers threat Gary Rideout responded four minutes later with his first of the night, knotting things at one a piece. Before the 1st period was over, Levine came through for the Funniest Team on Ice, taking a Hughson feed nearly the length of the rink and sending it past guest GSI goalkeeper Matt Barber. Steve Chamberlain then made it a two-goal lead for the Jokers early in the 2nd period, before GSI regular-season points leader Dominic Chartier found some room and narrowed the gap to a single goal.

Clint Davies scored early in the third frame to draw GSI even with the Jokers, then potted another a mere 42 seconds later to put his team ahead for the second time in the game. But with just 3:42 remaining in the game, and with the Jokers on the power play, forwards Hunter Collins and Levine moved the puck to Takacs, who tied proceedings up 4-4. A subsequent Jokers power play yielded three shots on net, but the score remained tied as the teams returned to even strength.

A tie, however, would not be enough to deliver the Jokers to the Championship game for the second straight year. Even with the promise of an additional half point for the team's second penalty-free game of the night, a tie would see the Islanders and Jokers both finish the night with three points. GSI would then edge the Jokers in goal differential, having bettered the Humiliation by a single goal in Game 1.

All of those calculations, however, would be deemed moot as Levine, with netminder Lawrence on the Jokers bench for the extra attacker, managed to coax the puck into the back of the Islanders' net a mere second (or less) before the final buzzer, thus providing what was easily the most dramatic game ending in UUHA history.

The Gas Station Islanders take on the Parkdale Hockey Lads at 7:00 pm next Saturday, April 16 in the Bronze Medal Game. The Jokers and Wheatfield Souldiers face off an hour-and-a-half later (8:30 pm) for the 2011 UUHA Championship Gold Medal Game. Both Medal games will feature three 15-minute stop-time periods. If necessary, tied games will be decided by an abbreviated, sudden-death period and (if still tied) a shoot-out.
