TORONTO - The Wheatfield Souldiers have earned a berth in the 2011 UUHA Gold Medal Game, defeating the Parkdale Lads in back-to-back games this past Saturday night. The Lads will see action in the Bronze Medal Game, to be played at 7:00 pm on Saturday, April 16. The puck drops on the Gold Medal Game immediately afterward at 8:30 pm. Opponents for both games will be determined this coming Saturday when the Humiliation, Jokers and Gas Station Islanders participate in a three-game playoff round-robin.
Souldiers forward Kelly McCaig opened the Game 1 scoring at 11:50 of the 1st period, converting a pass from defenceman Mike Wilk and sliding it past Lads goaltender Tony Lanz. McCaig would assist on his team's next goal, springing Jimmy Murphy whose hard pass through the slot was one-timed by Souldiers captain Chuck Molgat. Molgat would pot two more goals before the final buzzer, earning his first-ever post-season Souldiers hat-trick. Murphy would tally a pair of goals as well, while Keven Magura and Brad Sveistrup would also find the back of the Lads net.
Lads forward Roger Santos scored the lone goal for his squad, converting a pass from teammate Fil Freitas to spoil the shutout attempt by veteran Souldiers goaltender John Sutton midway through the 3rd frame.
The Souldiers got on the board first in Game 2, as well, with Murphy and linemate Mike Dutchin hooking up for a tally just three minutes in. The Lads came alive in the 2nd period, though, drawing within one on goals from Fabian Ruzic and Tommy Gough. Ruzic's blistering point shot bulged the twine in the top left corner of the Souldiers net, evading the catcher of goaltender Sheldon Shurland by mere centimeters. Though less pretty, Gough's marker (scored just 59 seconds later) represented the longtime Lads forward's first goal of the 2010/11 UUHA campaign. Gough wasn't done offensively, either, combining with Tony Nappo and Fil Freitas to pot his second tally of the night late in the 3rd frame. By that time, however, the game, and the series, was effectively out of reach for the Lads with the Souldiers having established a five-goal lead.
McCaig would finish the game with a natural hat-trick, potting three straight 3rd period goals. Dutchin scored two consecutive goals and Murphy finished his second match of the night with a pair of tallies. Sveistrup, meanwhile, finished off a sweet tic-tac-toe play and registered what would stand up as the game-winning goal in the process.
