Lads, Humiliation End Regular Season on High Note

TORONTO - The Parkdale Hockey Lads and the Humiliation wrapped up their UUHA Regular Season schedules in impressive fashion this past Saturday night. The Lads eked out their second straight tie (2-2) with the league-leading Jokers, while the Humiliation turned in one of their most consistently solid efforts of the season, thumping the Gas Station Islanders by a score of 4-1. The two victorious teams will now carry that confidence into Round One of the UUHA Playoffs, where they will face each other next Saturday, March 19 in a back-to-back, two-game aggregate series.

Humiliation forward Paul Aucoin opened the scoring just four minutes into the game, completing a passing play involving line mate Stephen Cribbin and defenceman Mike Craig (both of whom would pick up an additional assist later in the game). Fernando Freitas (sparing for the short-benched GSI) evened things up eight minutes later with a hard, seeing-eye point shot that seemingly went through every player on the ice before finding the top corner of the Humiliation net.

Joe Cook put the Orange Tide back in front early in the 2nd period, while teammate Mark Simmons added an insurance goal about five minutes later (Paul Morris assisted on both 2nd period tallies). Aucoin, meanwhile, provided a bookend midway through the final frame, blasting a one-timer past Isles minder Sean Markle.

While the Humiliation's offensive elements carried the victory, goaltender Sheldon Shurland helped secure it by turning aside 27 of 28 shots. The game was the second straight contest in which GSI has to face the Wheatfield Souldiers prospect (who was sparing for the Humiliation), who shut out the Isles in the previous (albeit far less offensive-oriented) match-up.

Goaltending was a big part of the storyline of the proceeding contest, too, with Lads prospect Tony Lanz all but slamming the door on the Jokers. According to the shot clock, the Jokers managed to put the rubber at Lanz a whopping 39 times, with just two of those attempts finding the back of the net. Jokers tender Burke Lawrence, meanwhile, was tested a little more than half as much (15 shots were registered), but was bettered once on the power play, and once again with the man advantage after a rare, Jokers defensive cough-up to Lads sniper Kyle Welton. Tom Nesbitt picked up the first Lads goal, while Fil Freitas earned an assist.

Jokers goal scoring was handled by Gary Rideout and Mike Takacs, while Tyler Stewart, Pete Windrem and Tacaks picked up assists on the night.

The Jokers' Round 1 Playoffs schedule has the first-place squad facing off against the second-place Wheatfield Souldiers and third-place Gas Station Islander on Saturday, March 26. All three teams will face each other that night, playing two games each at either 7:00, 8:00 or 9:00 pm. Please check the 2011 UUHA Playoffs schedule for game times.
