TORONTO - The Parkdale Porcupines defeated the Humiliation 6-4 this past Saturday, picking up the team's first victory of the regular season in the process. Prior to Saturday night's match, the struggling team had been nursing a seven-game losing streak extending all the way back to September, 2010. In addition to being the team's first win of the season, the game also represented the Porcupines' inaugural victory as a UUHA expansions team.
Porcupines forwards Brian Bentley and Frank Gualtieri both potted a pair of goals for the Quills, while Peter Aquilina and Ross Machon rounded out the scoring. Meanwhile, Humiliation veteran Luke Moretti made his most significant impact since emerging from retirement last month. Moretti tallied twice for the Orangemen while setting up linemate Stephen Cribbin on a dandy goalmouth tapper play. Forward Mark Simmons opened the Humiliation scoring midway through the 1st period, and Joe Cook picked up a pair of helpers as well.
Besides the Porcs netting their first W, the other big story of the game was at the far end of the ice where Parkdale Lads forward Simon Evers donned goalie equipment for the erstwhile rival side. Despite getting off to a shaky start (the Porcs scored on their first two shots of the game) Evers managed to find his composure, making several difficult saves and turning in numerous performances that betrayed his relative inexperience between the pipes.
In other UUHA action, the league-leading Jokers doubled up on a woefully depleted Gas Station Islanders side by a score of 6-3. However, despite the seeming perfect storm of player unavailability (GSI had just seven skaters for the game, including serial spare Keven Magura) the Isles managed to turn in a much closer game than the final score suggested, and without several key offensive players in the lineup, to boot.
Please note the UUHA takes a scheduled break next weekend while Upper Canada College plays host to an annual collegiate tournament. UUHA regular season action returns the following weekend (Saturday, Feb. 5) with the Humiliation taking on the Jokers at 7:00 pm, and the Wheatfield Souldiers going up against the Parkdale Lads immediately thereafter.
