Wheatfield Gold: Souldiers claim UUHA Championship

TORONTO - The Wheatfield Souldiers have won the inaugural UUHA Championship. The veteran team, comprised primarily of expatriate Winnipeggers, claimed the league title Saturday night by defeating the Jokers Hockey Club by a score of 8-5.

Meanwhile, in earlier UUHA playoff action, the Gas Station Islanders held on to defeat the Humiliation by a score of 3-2, thus claiming the league's Bronze Medal title.

The Gold Medal win represented the Souldiers' first Championship since claiming the GTHLA Eh Division title in 2008. Coincidentally, the final series of that playoff run also pitted the Souldiers against the Jokers, who ultimately lost that contest in a Game 3 shootout. Historically, things haven't always gone the Souldiers' way in the course of the longstanding rivalry between the two teams: the Jokers have twice bounced the Souldiers from tournament playoff contention in the annual event formerly known as the Exclaim! Cup. But it was the Souldiers' turn to shine once again, and the team did so despite losing three of four previous match-ups with the Jokers over the course of the past eight months.

Dressed appropriately in their Gold uniforms, the Souldiers got up on the scoreboard early, as forward Eric Toth combined with linemates Chuck Molgat and Jim Murphy to put the puck past goaltender Burke Lawrence five minutes into the 1st period. Toth and Murphy hooked up again a mere five minutes later to put the Souldiers up by a pair. But the Jokers responded on the double with a pair of tallies less than a minute apart to draw even going into the 2nd frame. Shots on goal after 15 minutes of stop-time play were 14-5 in the Jokers' favour, suggesting Souldiers starting goaltender Jordan Stewart was enjoying an early and significant edge over his cross-rink counterpart.

With the exception of a lone goal by Jokers sniper Mike Takacs, the 2nd period belonged to the Souldiers - more specifically to Toth and his linemates, who combined for three more goals. Steve Harkness also capitalized for the Souldiers, converting a tic-tac set up from his brother Mike and winger Brad Sveistrup at the 7:06 mark.

Both teams traded a pair of 3rd period goals, including singles from Jokers Joel Lacoursiere and Gary Rideout Jr., and a late empty-net tally by Toth. But it was the Souldiers hanging on to win the game, the Championship and one of the most handsome trophies in adult recreational hockey.

After receiving the glittering hardware from UUHA Board of Governors representative Stephen Cribbin, Souldiers captain Chuck Molgat conducted a brief victory dance before quickly turning the prize over to Toth, who finished the night with an astounding six goals and an assist - an offensive feat that easily stands as the greatest individual effort in the team's 11-year history. The Souldiers' record book was similarly amended by the collective efforts of Toth's line: along with centre Molgat and winger Murphy, the so-called MTM line (which made its debut on this particular evening) combined for an astounding 17 points on the night.

Bronze Medal game scoring was opened by Humiliation forward Stephen Cribbin, who converted a pass from Eric Partington just 13 seconds into the game. Cribbin, who wears #1, also assisted on his team's only other goal of the game, which was scored with just 13 seconds remaining in the final period. Partington netted that tally, with Paul Morris picking up the other assist. GSI scoring was handled by Dom Chartier, who bagged the Islander's first two goals. Dylan Hudecki got the game winner less than a minute into the 2nd period. Chartier, along with George Collins and Pim van der Toom, collected assists, while Dave Bidini claimed two helpers on the night.
