TORONTO - There were just two games on the UUHA schedule this past Saturday night and they both ended with the same lopsided result. The 2nd-place Brockton Rockets earned their ninth win of the season with a 6-1 beatdown on the Jokers. Meanwhile, the Wheatfield Souldiers managed their best margin of the season with a 6-1 victory over the Parkdale Hockey Lads.
Daniel Wilcox had a goal and two assists, Blaine Tynes scored twice and four other Rockets players posted multiple-points as one of the hottest squads in the league rolled over the Jokers Saturday night at Upper Canada College. The Brockton Boys went up 5-0 over the first two periods, before trading singles in the 3rd en route to a 6-1 rout of the Funniest Team on Ice.
League points leader Dustin Harris bolstered his claim with a goal and an assist, giving him 15 goals and 10 assists for 25 points on the campaign. On the opposing side, Adrian Cavan had the Jokers' lone goal, combining with Gary Rideout Jr. and Sean Cullen on the power-play midway through the final frame. That goal scuttled Rockets' tender Jonathan Dickson's bid for what would've been his league-leading fourth shutout of the season.
Wheatfield Souldiers goaltender John Sutton came within 19 seconds of registering his first shutout of the season, giving up a five-hole marker to Lads forward Ian Seeton on the breakaway. Sutton had stifled the Lads on their 15 previous attempts. The Souldiers put 25 shots on the net, 19 of which were turned aside by spare goaltender Ryan Roberts, on loan from the Imperials.
Souldiers forward Eric Toth turned in a hat-trick, while Scott Pettus, Brad Sveistrup and Brian Bentley also tallied for the Golden Boys, the latter opening the scoring under two minutes onto the game. Bentley assisted on Sveistrup's goal (as did Jon Weier) less than four minutes later. Pettus was credited with setting up all three of Toth's tallies, while Kev Magura got in on two of those goals as well.
The win was the Souldiers' first victory in three games, while the Lads winless woes continued, extending to the team's losing streak to eight games - a particularly vexing record given the squad opened the season with seven straight wins.
The Lads will have one more opportunity to right the ship before the Playoffs when they meet the Humiliation on Saturday, Feb. 23 at UCC. Meanwhile, the Souldiers (who are now tied with the Lads for 3rd place in the standings) will finish out the Regular Season in a fortnight when they face off against the Brockton Rockets on Saturday, Feb. 16. That game (which could portend a Playoffs match-up) is scheduled as a 4:00 pm matinee contest at Maple Leaf Gardens.
