TORONTO - The Yule Jets managed to pot one more goal than their red-shirted opponents this past Saturday at McCormick Arena to claim the coveted Yule Log trophy, foraged this year from the same Lake of Bays-area forest as last season's handsome prize. Speedy youngster, Sebastian Vella, claimed 1st Star honours on the Final, potting a pair of goals including one that stood up as the game-winning tally. Steve Levine was named tournament MVP, though, having led the Yule Jets to a first-place finish in the round-robin portion of the tournament with five goals and two assists.
The Yule Jets kicked off the afternoon tourney with a 6-3 win over the Yule Habs, before securing first place with another win over the Yule Leafs - this time a tighter match that ended 6-4 (essentially a one-goal game with the last lamp-lighter being an empty-net marker). That set the stage for a winner-moves-on match between the Yule Leafs and Yule Habs who both entered the ring with zero points in the tourney thus far. After a scoreless opening frame, and perhaps benefitting from an hour-long rest since their previous contest, the Yule Habs gained a step on the white-shirted Yule Leafs in the 2nd period with goals off the sticks of Sebastian Chartier and Yule rookie Kevin Muir. The former would strike again early in the 3rd, converting a feed from defenceman Adam Thrasher to put the Yule Habs up 3-0. Oliver Vesley increased the lead with an unassisted effort at the 7:45 mark, before Dominic Chartier iced proceedings with a late tally of his own (also unassisted).
Having suffered losses in both of their round-robin matches, the Yule Leafs were subjected to a dispersal draft with Sebastian Vella claimed off the top by the 1st-place Yule Jets, who would also select Richard Clarkin, Mario Vella, Seth Singer and Glen Gummerson (though not necesarilly in that order). The Yule Habs' picks included John McDonald, Tim Posgate, Mike Frolick, Marc Hickox and Dan Kleiman.
The first-overall selection would prove to be a wise one as Sebastian Vella contributed a pair of goals to the Yule Jets' win. Later Yule Jets' picks Singer and Clarkin would also figure into the scoring with an assist each. Despite the loss, the selection of Frolick would pay dividends for the Yule Habs as the Lads sniper contributed a goal and an assist to the title bid. Draft pick Kleiman was in on the Yule Habs third goal of the game, as well.
With the Yule Log tourney, and the holidays in general, put to bed for another year, the UUHA is set to return to action this coming Saturday night with three games on the schedule. The Gas Station Islanders will face off against the Beau's Beer Hack at 7:00 pm, followed by the Humiliation and Parkdale Hockey Lads at 8:00 pm. The final match of the night will see the Wheatfield Souldiers go up against the Jokers at 9:00 pm. All three games take place at Upper Canada College.
