Gardens Party Sees Souldiers, Rockets Tie, GSI Rout Lads and Hack Edge Humiliation

TORONTO - The Gas Station Islanders finally put an end to an eight-game losing streak, and in a big way, too, this past Saturday afternoon at Maple Leaf Gardens. The Isles routed the Parkdale Hockey Lads to the tune of 8-1 in a game that featured five different GSI goal scorers, while league-leading Lads sniper Kyle Welton was held to just a single tally. Earlier in the day, the Wheatfield Souldiers and 1st-place Brockton Rockets posted a 5-5 draw in a wild, back-and-forth contest, while the Beau's Beer Hack edged the Humiliation by a score of 6-5.

Simon Evers and Ian Seeton were credited assists on Kyle Welton's lone goal for the Lads, which transpired early in the middle frame of the team's second match of the season vs. the Islanders (the first meeting, back on Nov. 17, resulted in a 2-1 win for the Lads). The goal put the brakes on a rolling GSI offence that finished out the 1st period with three unanswered goals from the likes of Ed Belanger, Bry Nevin and Dom Chartier. But by the time the horn sounded on the middle frame, GSI had potted three more with Tim Vesely (2) and spare Dan Brock making their presence noticed at the red-light party. Brock and Belanger stacked their patties with another goal each in the 3rd as the Gassers skated into the holiday break with their biggest win of the season and first victory since Oct. 13.

With the win, GSI's record improved to 3-8-0 on the season, mirroring that of the Humiliation. However, the Humiliation's penchant for avoiding the sin bin of late has earned them a full 2 points worth of penalty-free bonuses, leaving GSI as the lone current occupant of the dingy basement suite that is last place in the standings.

Beau's Beer Hack veteran Lance Moreton opened the scoring in his squad's 4:00 pm tilt vs. the Humiliation - a game that saw the Hack outshoot the Humiliation 26-17 before the smoke finally cleared, revealing the splendid underside of Maple Leaf Garden's iconic dome. Aaron Brophy was in net for the Hack while John Sutton served as his cross-rink counterpart, on loan to the Humiliation from the Wheatfield Souldiers.

Two goals in under a minute from Mike Thompson and Sean Morrison won the lead for the Humiliation midway through the 1st, but an unassisted effort from Aaron Foster tied things back up before the period was through. Foster struck again early in the 2nd, combining with Gavin Patterson and George Stroumboulopoulos for his sixth goal of the campaign, before the Hack lead was bolstered by Christain Thatcher and Chris Cacciotti. Morrison's second goal of the game followed shortly thereafter, applying a bit of breaking pressure as the Hack's train gathered steam.

Dominic Hanlon would score one more for Beau's Boys early in the 3rd, before the Black Wizards answered with a pair of their own, this time from Thompson and Luke Moretti. But those tallies would prove one too few as the Hack put the ribbon on a 6-5 win, claiming the advantage in the three-game season series between the two teams. The Hack bettered the Humiliation 3-1 the last time they met (on Oct. 20) and will have an opportunity at the sweep come Feb. 16. Coincidentally, that game is also scheduled as an afternoon contest at MLG.

The man advantage proved to be a significant factor in the second meeting of the season between the 1st-place Brockton Rockets and reigning UUHA Champions, the Wheafield Souldiers, as the 3:00 pm Gardens contest would see a trio of power-play goals scored. Inspired by an outright drubbing in the first game of the season between the two rival squads (which the Rockets won 8-0) the Souldiers were first on the board this time, as Mike Harkness buried a feed from Scott Montgomery to solve Rockets goalie Jonathan Dickson at the 3:40 mark of the 1st period. James Neilson pressed the reset button just two minutes later, though, as Michael Wilcox found him unchecked off the open side of Souldiers' goalie Sheldon Shurland's net. But with 45 seconds remaining in the frame, captain Chuck Molgat would convert a feed from Eric Toth to beat Dickson along the ice and just inside the post, reestablishing the Souldiers' lead.

Wilcox tied things up again with his side enjoying the man advantage early in the 2nd, but the Souldiers went back on top shortly thereafter on a D-splitting breakaway effort from Scott Pettus. Blaine Tynes (on the power-play) and Dustin Harris went two-in-a-row for the Rockets, establishing the streaking Brocktonites' first lead of the game, but Pettus' second of the afternoon nipped that advantage in the bud off the ensuing face-off. Then, with the Souldiers enjoying a two-man advantage, veteran Souldiers defenceman Keven Magura pounded in the go-ahead goal (with Brian Bentley and Bob Lavery assisting). But that lead wouldn't stand up either, as Harris' second of the game (and 12th of the season) put a clove hitch on proceedings once more, sending the match into the books as a 5-5 draw.

The Rockets and Souldiers will meet one more time this season (Feb. 16 at Maple Leaf Gardens) in what will be the final game for both teams before the playoffs commence.

The UUHA enjoys a 13-day break over the holidays before resuming Regular Season action on Saturday, Jan. 5 at Upper Canada College. That evening will see the Jokers return to action vs. the Wheatfield Souldiers, and the Gas Station Islanders attempt to make it two-in-a-row vs. the Beau's Beer Hack, while the Humiliation will renew acquaintances with the Parkdale Hockey Lads.

In the meantime, Merry Christmas and a happy New Year!
