Jokers Rout GSI With 3rd-Frame Surge While Lads Edge Humiliation 4-3

TORONTO - An otherwise tight game turned out a lopsided whooping as the Jokers scored six 3rd period goals to defeat the Gas Station Islanders 7-1 this past Saturday night at Upper Canada College. The evening's other contest saw the still-unbeaten Parkdale Hockey Lads edge a spare-studded Humiliation side 4-3, with the game-wining tally beating the buzzer by a mere three seconds.

If you enjoy back-and-forth hockey games then the first meeting of the season between the Lads and Humiliation would've met with your hearty approval, as the rival squads traded goals - and the lead - right up the final buzzer. Humiliation spare Sean Morrison lit the lamp behind Lads goalie Luis Freitas less than 5 minutes into the game, converting a feed from team captain Mike Thompson (Rob Thompson also assisted). But that lead wouldn't last into the next period, as veteran Lads defenceman Fernando Freitas reset the score with nine seconds remaining, earning league scoring leader Kyle Welton an assist in the process.

The 2nd frame saw the Humiliation regain the advantage, this time off the stick of spare Geoff Hohendorf, who combined with fellow call-up Dan Schwartz at the 12:09 mark. That lead wouldn't be carried into the next period either, though, as Lads sophomore Eric Crousette combined with Dave Ball and Mike Ryan to even things up with 39 seconds left on the clock. Three-and-a-half minutes into the 3rd it was the Lads turn to go ahead, with Fabian Ruzic finding Welton for his seventh goal of the season. Just over three minutes later, though, Morrison struck again (with help from the Thompson brothers), knotting things up at three a piece. But with the clock just three clicks from registering the game as a draw, and four players on the ice per side, Welton would make good on a set up from Crousette to solve spare goaltender Jeremy Smith once again, maintaining the Lads season-long, 4-game undefeated streak in the process.

The first meeting of the season between the Jokers and Islanders was a tight affair as well... that is until the 3rd period came around and the Funniest Team on Ice busted out the smelling salts.

Steve Levine got the Jokers on the board early, combining with Jeff Kassel to solve goaltender Joseph Steinman just a couple of minutes into the game. But that would be the extent of the scoring for the better part of the next two periods, as Steinman and cross-ice counterpart Burke Lawrence smothered or turned aside a combined 29 of 30 shots on goal. Jokers height leader Joel Lacoursiere was the first to trip the floodgate switch, though, putting a pair of pucks past Steinman less than a minute apart. Adrian Cavan, Sean Cullen and Levin (2) assisted on those tallies. Mike Takacs scored next, registering his first of the season with the help of Jeff Kassel and Tim Progosh. Levin then potted his second of the game (from Takacs and Kassel), followed by Kassel (with Cavan assisting). GSI sniper Dominic Chartier would spoil Lawrence's shutout bid at the 3:31 mark of the 3rd, before Lacoursiere complete his hat-trick (unselfishly set up by Levine) with 53 seconds left in the game.

UUHA Regular Season action continues this coming Saturday, Nov. 3 with six teams taking to the ice at UCC. The 7:00 pm game will see the Humiliation attempt to snap a four-game losing skid when they face off against the Brockton Rockets (2-2-0). The following game has the still-winless Wheatfield Souldiers going up against the Gas Station Islanders (2-2-0), while the 9:00 pm match will see the Beau's Beer Hack (3-1-0) attempt a run at 1st place in the standings vs. the Jokers (2-1-0).
