TORONTO - The Parkdale Hockey Lads defeated the Jokers 6-2 at Maple Leaf Gardens while the Humiliation and Hack skated into the win column as well, downing the Wheatfield Souldiers 1-0 and the Brockton Rockets 5-1, respectively, on the first day of the 2018-19 UUHA Regular Season.
Perennial Lads scoring leader Kyle Welton completed his first hat-trick of the season midway through the 2nd period, potting his second unassisted tally of the game after intercepting a Jokers clearing attempt and burying the puck hard along the ice behind netminder Marc Hickox. Mike Frolick, Fabian Ruzic and spare Josh Bendahan also scored for the Lads, while Joel Lacoursierre and Steve Chamberlain were the two Jokers lamplighters. Goaltender Luis Freitas picked up his first win of the new season, stopping or turning aside 21 of 23 Jokers shots.
Humiliation journeyman Glenn Gummerson was the lone goal scorer in his squad's 1-0 victory over the Wheatfield Souldiers. Paul Morris and Luke Scheer were credited with assists on the tally. Goaltender Luke Smit earned his fist shutout of the season, while cross-ice counterpart Sheldon Shurland quashed 11 of 12 attempts.
The Beau's Beer Hack and Brockton Rockets conspired to post one of the most lopsided shots totals in recent UUHA memory, as the Hack skated to a 5-1 victory over their opponent. The outcome could've been even more lopsided were it not for the stellar play of Brockton goaltender Joe Steinman, who made 36 saves in the sweat-drenched affair, escaping from the 60-minute barrage with very respectable .878 save percentage. Hack goalie Aaron Brophy saw his shutout bid spoiled with just one minute remaining in the 3rd period as Michael Wilcox tallied unassisted for his side's only goal of the game. Hack goalscorers included Lance Moreton, Wade Ivan, Louis Durand, Aaron Foster and Chris Barkley.
This coming weekend's UUHA action will see the Gas Station Islanders make their season debut vs. the Hack at 7:00 pm followed by the Souldiers and Rockets at 8:00 pm. The evening's late game will feature the Humiliation and Jokers. All three contest will transpire on teh Eaton rink at Upper Canada College's William P. Wilder Arena.
