Jokers Stupified as Lads Win President's Cup, Select GSI as 1st Round Playoff Opponent

Prior to the Lads' 7-1 penalty-free victory over GSI, photogenic Jokers captain Ted Bisaillion (above) erroneously embraces the UUHA President's Cup trophy at Maple Leaf Gardens this past Saturday, under the mistaken impression his team had once again clinched the prize. They did not. However, the Jokers did maintain possession of the Lady Malaysia trophy, much to the chagrin of the Brockton Rockets. (photo: Marc Hickox)

TORONTO - For only the second time in the team's history, the Parkdale Hockey Lads have captured the UUHA's President's Cup as the league's top Regular Season team. Additionally, the Lads have selected the Gas Station Islanders - whom they defeated 7-1 this past Saturday at Maple Leaf Gardens - as their opponent for the opening round of the 2018 Playoffs.

The Lads' weekend victory over the Isles was compounded by a bonus half point for putting in a penalty-free game, which saw the team tied with the Jokers in the final Regular Season standings. However, the Lads registered one more win than the Jokers did over the course of the 2017/18 season, thus breaking the tie in their favour and capturing top spot for the first time since the 2013/14 UUHA Regular Season.

The Lads won all three Regular Season match-ups vs. the Gassers this season, posting a combined score of 12-3 in the process. It's worth noting the Isles were without team scoring leader and perennial offensive threat Dominic Chartier for this past Saturday's lopsided contest. Mind you, Lads sniper Kyle Welton was absent from the game sheet as well, leaving it up to Ian Seeton to set up Tommy Gough in front of the opposition's net. Gough had two goals and an assist on the night, while Seeton finished the game with a pair of goals and three assists. Ryan Kalinka also had a pair of goals and an assist for the Lads, while Mike Frolick registered a goal and two assists. Most importantly, though, Gough's multiple-point night allowed him to eclipse Jokers captain Ted Bisaillion in a two-dog scoring race that had served as a bitter, season-long sidebar for both athletes.

For their part, the Jokers were looking for a penalty-free win on Saturday as they faced off against the Porcupines under the Gardens' iconic dome. Instead, both squads skated away with a penalty-free tie. And while the result saw the Funniest Team on Ice yield the President's Cup to the Lads, Bisaillion and company were able to maintain their grip on the coveted Lady Malaysia trophy, awarded to the UUHA team that incurs the fewest penalty minutes over the course of the Regular Season. The Jokers and Rockets had been engaged in a veritable pillow fight over the Lady M throughout the 2017/18 season, ultimately finishing a mere 2 minutes apart while combining for a whopping 9.5 bonus points for penalty-free games.

Fittingly, the Jokers have selected the Rockets as their 1st Round opponent for the upcoming 2018 UUHA Playoffs, which commence this coming Saturday, Feb. 24 at Upper Canada College. The Jokers defeated the Rockets in both of the teams' two Regular Season meetings this season, outscoring them 11-5 over the course of those two games.

The Humiliation got the better of the Wheatfield Souldiers on Saturday, knocking off the reigning league champions 3-1 with the help of some solid goaltending from spare tender Darryl Webster. With their lineup depleted due to long-weekend obligations, the Humiliation rang up a pair of Jokers (Marc Hickox and Charlie Rishor) for the occasion, which also marked the return of team veteran Stephen Cribbin to the ice after missing a large chunk of the season due to injury. He figured in on two of the team's goals, as the Humiliation evened the two-game season series vs. the Souldiers while preventing Burton's Boys from vying for the President's Cup (despite having woken up that morning in 1st place). However, the Souldiers would pick up a bonus half point in the game for going penalty free, enabling them to finish above the Humiliation in the standings and thus select an opponent for the opening round of the Playoffs. Of the remaining teams available, the Souldiers opted for the Parkdale Porcupines, leaving the Humiliation to face the Beau's Beer Hack come next Saturday.

Luke Scheer, Andrew Blakey and Jimmy Sioukas scored for the Humiliation, while Keven Magura got the lone Souldiers goal, spoiling Webster's shutout bid with half a minute remaining in the game.

The slate of Gardens games also saw the Beau's Beer Hack defeat the Brockton Rockets by a score of 5-3 in a tight contest that was ultimately put to bed by a late empty-net tally off the stick of the Hack's Louis Durand. Dustin Harris tallied for the Rockets while teammate Bruce Worthington had a pair of goals. The other Hack lamplighters included Lance Moreton (2) and Aaron Foster, who finished the Regular Season as the UUHA's official scoring leader with 18 goals. Hack goaltender Aaron Brophy picked up his league-leading seventh win of the season as he tied with Souldiers' goaltender Sheldon Shurland for that honour.

The 2018 UUHA Playoffs get underway this coming Saturday, Feb. 24 at Upper Canada College with the Parkdale Hockey Lads and Gas Station Islanders taking to the ice at 7:00 pm, followed by the Jokers and Brockton Rockets at 8:00 pm. The Wheafield Souldiers will face off against the Parkdale Porcupines at 9:00 pm while the late game will see the Humiliation renew acquaintances with the Beau's Beer Hack at 10:00 pm. The same team combos will take on one another the following Saturday (although game times will be reversed) for the second and decisive game of a first-to-three-points opening round Playoff series.
