Pines, Humiliation Post Wins While Eye-Landers Tie Rockets

Gas Station Islanders' Joseph Steinman became the first goalie in UUHA history to play an entire game without the benefit of binocular vision, earning a tie vs. the league-leading Brockton Rockets in the process.

TORONTO - If you think one requires depth perception to avoid being beaten by the 1st-place Brockton Rockets, then you don't share the same philosophy as Gas Station Islanders goaltender Joseph Steinman. Despite playing this past Saturday night's game with an eyepatch over his right eye (due to a scratched cornea) Steinman turned aside 17 of 19 shots from the soaring Rockets to hold his team in the game and, ultimately, help deliver a come-from-behind 2-2 draw. Rockets goaltender Jonathan Dickson was no slouch either, although his three-dimensional sight wasn't put to too great a test until the final frame which saw GSI outshoot their opponent 9-4. Just one of those shots - off the stick of sniper Dominic Chartier - found the back of the net, but it would stand up as the game-tying tally. Charitier also scored for GSI midway through the 2nd period, while the two Rockets goal-getters were Oliver Sutherns and Bryan Eelhart, who each bulged the twin in the middle frame, as well. Dustin Harris and Richard Clarkin picked up assists for Brockton, while Seth Singer helped set up both of Chartier's markers.

The Humiliation picked up their second win in a row on Saturday night, this time soundly defeating the Jokers by a score of 5-2. Captain Mike Thompson had a pair of goals and Luke Scheer had a goal and an assist, including a dramatic 1st-period tally that saw him convert a streaking one-timer from Paul Morris before diving over outstretched Jokers goaltender Burke Lawrence in a scene reminiscent of Bobby Orr's famous 1970 Stanley Cub-winning goal. Scheer would find himself in on another pretty goal later in the game, ringing a hard shot off the post and onto the stick of Morris for the Humiliation's fourth tally of the contest. Luke Moretti and spare Bryan Eelhart (on loan from the Brockton Rockets) would also solve Lawrence, while Humiliation goaltender Luke Smit would be gotten to by Jokers Tim Progosh and defenceman Derek Thompson. The game represented the fourth time this season the Humiliation has scored five or more goals in a game, all of which (not surprisingly) have resulted in victories. The Jokers - now winless in their last four contests - picked up their seventh penalty-free bonus half-point in the game, making The Funniest Team on Ice the odds-on favourite to lay claim to this season's Lady Malaysia Award.

The evening's final game saw the Parkdale Porcupines turn in their strongest performance of the season thus far, blanking the Beau's Beer Hack 5-0 and registering their fourth win in their past six games. Daniel Tremblay opened the scoring with an unassisted tally just three minutes into the game, before Adam Thrasher made it 2-0 partway through the 2nd. An offensive burst in the 3rd period put the game out of reach for the Hack as Tremblay, Todd Moffat and Derek McChesney each scored within a two-and-a-half minutes window (including one power-play marker). The win represented the first time this season that the Quills have shut out their opponent, with goaltender Daniel Moriarity earning the honour.

UUHA action continues this coming Saturday, Jan. 20 with the Parkdale Hockey Lads (6-4-2) returning to action vs. the Humiliation (7-4-2) at 7:00 pm, followed by the Wheatfield Souldiers (6-5-1) and Porcupines (4-9-1) at 8:00 pm. The 1st-place Rockets (6-5-2) and 3rd-place Jokers (5-6-2) will go at it in the late game which, given both squads' aversion to the penalty box, promises to be an easy one for the referees to call. The Hack and GSI (both 5-6-2) will enjoy a bye week (during which time Jo Steinman plans to get his eye assessed). All three matches take place at Upper Canada College.
