Jokers Recapture 1st Place

TORONTO - An empty-net goal saw the Jokers edge the Wheatfield Souldiers 3-1 this past Saturday night, returning the funniest team on ice to the top spot in the UUHA standings. First-place honours had been held (albeit briefly) by the Souldiers heading into Saturday night's action.

The Jokers went up early in the 1st period on a rare flub by veteran Wheatfield goaltender John Sutton, whose errant clearing pass landed squarely on the stick blade of opposing forward Gary Rideout Jr. Wes Gerbrandt tied it up for the Golden Boys about five minutes later, but Paul Aucoin (a last-minute spare for the Red Ha-ha-harmy) tallied near the end of the opening frame. That goal would stand up as the game winner, with Rideout Jr.'s empty-net marker providing insurance later on.

With the win, the Jokers claim the regular season series against the Souldiers, having got the better of the team several weeks ago in another close game. The two teams will finish off their series this coming Saturday at Upper Canada College.

In other UUHA play, the Humiliation dropped a sound licking on the ARA Maulsticks, defeating the exhibition squad by a score of 6-2. Humiliation forward Stephen Cribbin turned in a four-point effort, assisting on goals by Paul Morris, Paul Aucoin and Eric Partington, all three of whom registered two-goals a piece. Aucoin and Morris equalled Cribbin's points tally with an additional pair of assists each.

Meanwhile, Maulsticks forward Roger Santos picked up two assists, while the Academy of Realist Art team's scoring was handled by Craig Berry and defensive spare Keven Magura.

UUHA action continues this coming Saturday with the Jokers taking on the Souldiers at 7:00 pm and the Parkdale Lads facing off against the Gas Station Islanders at 8:00 pm.
