Night of the Living Ties

TORONTO - If team parity is an issue in the UUHA's inaugural season, it wasn't much of a concern this past weekend. Four of the league's five regular teams skated off the ice with a single point Saturday night, and with just two goals each to their credit.

The much anticipated 7:00 pm Lads vs. Humiliation match didn't disappoint - unless you had money riding on a victory for either of the two arch rivals. Parkdale Hockey Lads opened the scoring midway through the 1st period when rookie Dennis Zammit converted a pass from team veteran Simon Evers (who collected the first of his two assists on the night). The Humiliation answered back less than two minutes later when plucky forward Stephen Cribbin picked up a feed from Paul Aucoin for the knot. A risky defensive play just three minutes later saw Cribbin fell Lads blueliner Nick Hehn on his way to the Humiliation net. However, Hehn failed to capitalize on the resulting penalty shot.

The 2nd period witnessed the teams trading goals in close succession, as well. This time it was Lads leading man Mike Frolick's turn to light the orange lamp (with Fernando Freitas and Evers assisting). But just over a minute later, Humiliation captain Mike Thompson collected a long pass up the middle, stepped on the gas and bulged the twine with authority.

Coincidentally, both teams played with spare goalies between the pipes, the Humiliation drafting the services of Gas Station Islanders minder Sean Markle, and the Lads pressing Wheatfield Souldiers goaltender Jordan Stewart into action. The Lads loaner would prove to be a big part of the game story, as a busy Stewart turned aside 33 of 35 Humiliation shots. Though solid, Markle wasn't half as busy facing just 15 Lads shots.

Markle's save percentage improved in his second match of the night, though, allowing just a pair of goals on 22 Wheatfield Souldiers attempts. Souldiers third-string tender Mike Wilk turned aside 16 of 18 GSI shots to remain unbeaten on the season. Goal scorers included Souldiers defenceman Keven Magura and forward Ken Hegan, who was participating in his first game since undergoing knee surgery two months ago. Pim van der Toorn and Nick Purdon tallied for GSI (and assisted on each others goals, as well).

Meanwhile, in afternoon action at Varsity Arena the Jokers were blown out by the exhibition Bellwoods Blackhawks by a score of 8-3. Blackhawks goal scorers were too numerous to name here (see game sheet notes for full details), and the Jokers relied on spares Eric Andrews and Jeff Kassel for all three of the team's goals. The game was the second last of the season to be played at Varsity. Next Saturday afternoon will see the Wheatfield Souldiers take on the Jokers at 2:00 pm at the old Bloor Street barn which, in the mid-70s, served as home ice for the Toronto Toros of the WHA. All remaining regular season Jokers games will be played on Saturday nights at Upper Canada College.
