TORONTO - Members of the mixed-squad Subtle Tendencies made UUHA history this past weekend by winning the inaugural Ghost Cup. Although a late rally by the opposing Team Big Stick nearly evened the score, the crimson-coloured Subtle side managed to hang on long enough to register victory by 8-5 margin. The event saw more than 20 individual players from UUHA teams (along with several invited guests) team up and face off against one another for a two-hour, winner-takes-all Halloween match.
Goaltenders Luis Freitas (Subtle) and Luke Smidt (Big Stick) picked up 1st and 2nd Stars of the Game honours (respectively), while Subtle GM Simon Evers was named 3rd Star. According to Ghost Cup convenor Keven Magura, both goalies' performances ranked as game highlights, while Evers was recognized by both teams for bringing the most Halloween spirit to the game.
Roger Santos, Pete Windrem, Steve Levine, Brad Sviestrup, Fabian Ruzic and Magura each registered multiple points for the winning side. Meanwhile, David Egli, Erwin Egli, Paul Morris and Andrew Warden saw their names repeated on the Team Big Stick side of game sheet. Despite the length of the contest, the game saw just one penalty handed out - an interference minor incurred by Subtle's Michael Longo. The game's final shot count was 40-31 in favour of Subtle.
UUHA regular season action returns this Saturday to both UCC and Varsity Arena. The next league-sanctioned mixed-teams event is set for the Xmas break when the second annual Yule Log gets underway. Details on that tournament are expected to be forthcoming in a couple of weeks time.
