Rockets, Hack Edge Humiliation, Porcs for Bronze Battle Berths

TORONTO - The Brockton Rockets edged the Humiliation by a goal this past Saturday night at Upper Canada College, while the Beau's Beer Hack defeated the Parkdale Porcupines in a shootout to advance to the Bronze Medal Game. That match is scheduled for 8:00 pm this coming Saturday, April 8 at UCC.

The Hack's Chris Barkley waited until early in the 2nd period to open the scoring in his squad's Bronze qualifier vs. the Porcupines. (All four teams seeing action that night had the distinction of having won one of their two playoff series, earning them a shot at a berth in the Bronze Medal game). So it seemed as though the reigning UUHA Champions may have punched their ticket when Aaron Foster put the Beau's Boys up by a pair a mere seven minutes later. The Quills' Todd Moffat had other ideas though, halving the Hack lead on the next shift with the assistance of David Vitt and Adam Thrasher. Then, late in the final frame, it was Vitt's turn to bulge the twine behind Hack goaltender Aaron Brophy, knotting proceedings at 2-2 and conjuring the looming spectre of a game-deciding shootout.

With no further scoring, the teams prepared their first three shooters, presumably with memories of their previous series fresh in their minds, both of which had been decided in the same fashion, but with different results. The Porcupines had come back against the Jokers to tie their two-game series at a game a piece, then won in the seventh round of a series-deciding shootout. The Hack had taken a similar course vs. the Gas Station Islanders, winning the second game of their series to force a shootout. However, the Islanders got the better of the Hack in that contest, winning the series (and a berth in the Championship Final) by a single shootout tally, denying the Hack an opportunity at a Championship three-peat in the process.

The first four shooters (two from each team) failed to find the back of the net, as Brophy and Porcupines back-up tender Tony Lanz (who had been the previous week's victor) both stood their frozen, blue-tinted ground. The third round saw a pair of failed attempts as well, that is until the referees decided that Brophy hadn't so much lost his stick on Thrasher's shot, but had intentionally tossed the lumber so as to foil the skilled blueliner's try. Accordingly, Thrasher was awarded a do-over, which Brophy - this time holding firm to his paddle - stoically turned aside. Still in need of a hero, the contest progressed to an extra round, with the Porcupines once again coming up just short of a tally. Cue veteran Hack captain Joseph McGinty, who had last experienced shootout success in an era when skate architecture was largely based on steel tube technology. Looking more like absent Hacker shootout specialist Lance Moreton, McGinty executed a deft right-to-left deke before cajoling the puck past Lanz to win the round, the game and a shot at Bronze for the Beauzonauts.

The Humiliation and Rockets game would end up being decided by a single goal as well, but wouldn't require any shootout heroics. The 1st period, however, did resemble a shootout at times with both teams potting a pair of early goals, namely Jimmy Sioukas and Luke Moretti for the Humiliation, and Dustin Harris and Mike Pett for the Brocktonites. Rockets veteran John Marshall put his side ahead with the only lamplighter of the 2nd frame, before the sticks cam alive again for the 3rd period. The Humiliation's Alex Hewitt converted a feed from Will Hewitt on the first shift of the period to knot things up at 3-3, before Pett found James Neilson to put the Rockets back on top just two minutes later. Michael Wilcox added an insurance marker shortly thereafter, which stood up despite a late empty-netter by Aaron Knight and an ensuing push for an equalizer by the Orange Tide. Rockets goaltender Jonathan Dickson managed to hold the fort, securing a victory for the Rockets, and a shot at a third-place overall finish in the Bronze.

The UUHA Playoffs wrap up this coming Saturday, April 8 with the Parkdale Hockey Lads taking on the Jokers in the Consolation Final at 7:00 pm, followed by the Bronze Medal game between the Hack and Rockets. The Wheatfield Souldiers and Gas Station Islanders will then play for the right to hoist the UUHA Championship Cup in the Championship Final at 9:00 pm.
