Cinco Vivos! Jokers, Souldiers, Humiliation Pot Five Goals Each, Post Wins Over Lads, Hack, Rockets

TORONTO -  The Jokers, Humiliation and Wheatfield Souldiers made lamp-lighting look routine this past Saturday night at Upper Canada College, posting five goals each in their respective victories over the Parkdale Hockey Lads, Brockton Rockets and Beau's Beer Hack.

The night's first game saw the still-winless Hack going up against the as-yet unbeaten Souldiers in the first match-up of the season between the league's two most recent championship-winning teams. The squads had not shared the ice since late last February when the Souldiers and Hack closed out the 2016/17 Regular Season in a game that ended 2-1 in the Wheatfielders' favour. Like that match, this one saw the Hack get on the scoreboard first with Chris Cacciotti combining with Aaron Foster and Lance Moreton to solve goaltender Sheldon Shurland late in the 1st period. The Souldiers answered back early in the 2nd period, though, as Jon Weier got his stick on a net-side dribbler that had caromed off the backboard and out front. League scoring leader Eric Toth put the Souldiers ahead a few minutes later, skating in a picked-off pass and roofing it unassisted over the shoulder of Hack back-up goaltender Ben Foster. Louis Durand put the teams back on even terms before the end of the period, though, with his second of the season as the horn sounded on a 2-2 after two scenario.

The 3rd period would see even more goalscoring than the first two frames combined, as the teams traded tally after tally with the Souldiers reestablishing one-goal leads on three occasions, and the Hack repeatedly tying things back up. Scott Pettus put the Souldiers up, then Chris Barkley scored a tying goal. Brad Sveistrup then combined with Toth and Keven Magura to put the Souldiers back on top, before Foster made good on a set up involving Durand and George Stroumboulopoulos to rest things at 4-4 with under two minutes to go. But on the very next play, Toth would capitalize on a Hack cough up to pot his second of the game, which would stand up as the game-winner.

With the win, the Souldiers maintained their tenuous hold on 1st place in the overall league standings, extending an unbeaten streak to six games with a record of 5-0-1. The Hack, meanwhile, remain in search of their first win of the season nursing an 0-4-1 record. The Beau's Boys do have a couple games in hand over several other teams, though.

The Humiliation scored early, and then often, as they turned in a favourable result that looked more lopsided on the scoreboard than it did on the ice. Mike Thompson got to Rockets goalie Jon Dickson just five minutes into the game, finishing off a nifty scoring play involving two of the team's three Lukes (in this case, Moretti and Scheer) and while shorthanded, too. Thompson followed that up with an unassisted, bar-down breakaway tally that, frankly, made as good a case of any in favour of the UUHA bringing in cameras, if only to assemble jaw-dropping highlight-reel material. Nicos Fassler scored next for the Orange Tide, picking up his first of the season, before Paul Morris teamed with T=Rob Thompson and Aaron Knight early in the 3rd, putting the game increasingly out of reach for the Brockton side. Morris (along with Moretti) would set up Glenn Gummerson awhile later, making the score 5-0. But, unwilling to see the Humiliation skate away with the win and the shutout, Rockets threat Dustin Harris would finish off a play involving Blaine Tynes and Scott Prudham to spoil the egg race for Luke Smit with a mere 30 seconds on the clock.

There would be no late spoilage in the final match of the night, as Jokers back-up goaltender Marc Hickox put in a strong performance to register his first shutout the season as the Funniest Team took it to the Parkdale Hockey Lads to the tune of 5-0. Mike Takacs emerged from a recent scoring slump to marshal his squad with the game's first two goals (including a short-handed tally set up by veteran Joker Adrian Cavan), then completed the hat-trick late in the 2nd (with the assistance of goaltender Hickox and puck-moving defenceman, Derek Thompson). Steves Levine and Chamberlain had the other two Jokers' goals.

UUHA action continues this coming Saturday, Nov. 11 with a special Remembrance Day slate of games beginning with the Humiliation and Hack at 7:00 pm, followed by the Souldiers and Gas Station Islanders at 8:00 pm. The night's schedule will wrap up with the seaon's first installment of the Battle of Parkdale, with the Parkdale Porcupines facing off against the Parkdale Lads at 9:00 pm. All three games take place at Upper Canada College.
