Worst Beats 1st as Humiliation Advances at Jokers' Expense

TORONTO - The 8th-place Humiliation knocked off the 1st-place Jokers Hockey Club this past Saturday night at Upper Canada College to claim the fourth and final berth in the 2nd Round winners bracket of the 2017 UUHA Playoffs. Meanwhile, the Wheatfield Souldiers conjured their most dominant game of the season to deliver on a must-win scenario vs. the Parkdale Porcupines. Both of those matches prompted series-deciding shootouts, the victors of which will now compete for a shot at a spot in the Championship Final.

The evening's other two games weren't short on drama, either, as the Brockton Rockets blanked the series-leading Gas Station Islanders 2-0 (forcing yet another series-deciding shootout), while the Parkdale Hockey Lads skated to a 5-5 draw with the Beau's Beer Hack - the tying goal crossing the Hack goal line with a mere second remaining in the game.

Lads sniper Ian Seeton combined with Stu Muirhead and playoffs scoring leader Kyle Welton to deliver a classic buzzer beater at the one second mark of the 3rd period, tying Game 2 of the Lads' two-game series with the Hack at 5-5. Despite the excitement, though, the late heroics were essentially all for naught as the Lads needed a win to force a series-deciding shootout with the reigning UUHA Champions (whom they had met in last year's Final). Still, it was an impressive comeback effort for the Lads who had found themselves trailing the Hack 5-2 going into the game's final frame. Welton ended up with a 4-point night (3G, 1A) while Seeton (1G, 2A), Muirhead (2A), Ryan Kalinka (1G) and Tom Nesbit (1A) all made the points column as well. For the Hack's part, tallies were had by Chris Cacciotti (2), Stefan Barkley, Aaron Foster and Joseph Debenedictis, with Gavin Patterson (2), Lance Moreton, Wade Ivan and Louis Durand picking up helpers. Lads goalie Luis Freitas and Hack keeper Aaron Brophy were both kept moderately busy facing a dozen-or-so quality shots each, while the Lads outperformed their opponents with the man advantage, making good on two of three powerplay situations, compared to the Hack's 0-for-1 man advantage stats.

With the Hack through to the winners bracket, it was time for the Gas Station Islanders and Brockton Rockets to determine which of the two teams would join last year's champs in the hunt for this season's hardware. Having skated away with a 4-2 victory the previous Saturday, GSI needed only a tie on this night to advance (in accordance with the first-team-to-three-points-over-two-games playoff format being employed for the second consecutive UUHA playoffs). A Rockets win would force a series-deciding shootout, which is the direction things appeared headed at the 5:35 mark of the 2nd period when Daniel Wilcox converted a feed from Bryan Eelhart to beat GSI goaltender Sean Markle with a powerplay tally. Then, less than a minute into the 3rd, Blane Tynes found Mike Pett streaking toward the Isles net to double the lead at 2-0, which is where things stood as the final horn sounded to close out Game 2 with the series tied a game apiece. Unfortunately for the energized victors, though - and especially goaltender Jonathan Dickson, who had just pitched a shutout to keep his side in the running - the Gassers would get the better of the shootout, snatching a series victory from the jaws of Game 2 defeat and heading to the Round 2 winners bracket for the first time since the 2013 UUHA Playoffs.

Having emerged from Game 1 of their two-game series vs. the Wheatfield Souldiers with a 3-1 win, the Parkdale Porcupines needed only a draw in Game 2 to remain en route to the Final. Compared to last year, things were looking up as the Quills had already bettered their 1st-round goalscoring threefold, having been shutout by the Humiliation in two successive contests in the 2016 Playoffs. Unfortunately for the series leaders, though, Souldiers goaltender Sheldon Shurland was determined to turn in a better performance than the previous match - a commitment the players in front of him apparently shared, as the Souldiers skated to their most lopsided victory (in terms of goal differential) since January of 2015. Eight different Souldiers players picked up points in the must-win contest including Eric Toth (2G), Brad Sveistrup (2A), Scott Pettus (1G, 1A) and Derek Domingos (1G, 1A), who were credited with a pair of points each (Domingos' marker being the result of an unfortunate shorthanded own-goal by the Porcupines). Shurland carried the shutout through the ensuing shootout, too, stopping all three Porcs shooters, while Porcs goalie Dean Bentley came up almost equal to that task, stopping two of three Souldiers shots. The third Souldiers player to shoot, Jay Ward, delivered the series-winning goal (see photo above), preventing the exercise from going to extra shooters.

The night's final contest was it's most anticipated, as well, what with Game 1 ending in a 1-1 draw between the 1st-place President's Trophy-winning Jokers and the 8th-place Humiliation who, though finishing in last place, still managed a respectable 6-6-4 regular-season record. However, of greater statistical interest was the fact the Jokers - despite having regularly got the better of most other UUHA teams - had not defeated the Humiliation since October of 2015.

That trend appeared to be turning by the end of the 1st period with the Jokers up 2-0 on goals from Mike Takacs and Kyle Dooley. But the middle frame would provide a mirror image as the Humiliation's Luke Sheer combined first with Glenn Gummerson and Stephen Cribbin to halve the Jokers' lead, then teamed up with Cribbin and Andrew Blakeley to draw his side even at 2 apiece. The 3rd period saw plenty of chances and a glove full of saves from both Humiliation goaltender Luke Smit and Jokers backup Marc Hickox, as well as a pair of disallowed goal (one each) and a late powerplay for the Jokers, but no additional scoring. So with a second consecutive tie in the books, the series proceeded to a decisive shootout. Appropriately, it was double goal-getter Luke Sheer who served up the winning shot as the Humiliation advanced to the 2nd Round winners bracket of the 2017 UUHA Playoffs.

For the Jokers, the disappointing result wasn't entirely unfamiliar: last year, the team was knocked out of Championship contention by the Lads who, like the Humiliation this past season, finished the regular season in 8th place to the league-leading Jokers' top spot. The Lads then went on to bounce the 2nd-place team en route to the Finals, that 2nd-place team being the same one that will now meet the Cinderalla-story Humiliation - namely the Wheatfield Souldiers.

The 2017 UUHA Playoffs resume Saturday, March 18 at UCC with the Gas Station Islanders and Beau's Beer Hack taking to the ice at 7:00 PM for Game 1 of their two-game, first-team-to-three-points series. The Humiliation and Wheatfield Souldiers face off at 8:00 PM that night, followed by the Brockton Rockets and Parkdale Hockey Lads. The evening's 10 PM contest will see the Parkdale Porcupines go up against the Jokers.
