Night of the Living Upsets as Lower Seeded Teams Post Wins, Tie

TORONTO - The Hack, Porcupines and Gas Station Islanders each defeated their higher-seeded, opening-round opponents this past Saturday night as the 2017 UUHA Playoffs got underway at Upper Canada College. Meanwhile, the 1st-place Jokers and 8th-place Humiliation skated to a dramatic 1-1 draw, underscoring the league-wide parity that would appear to have this year's Championship Cup up for grabs by any and all takers.

All eight UUHA teams are currently in the midst of a two-game, opening-round series, the winner of which is the first team to accrue 3 or more points over two games (a win being worth 2 points, and a tie worth 1).

Gary Rideout Jr. opened the scoring midway through the 1st period of the Jokers' postseason icebreaker, converting a feed from Steve Levine to solve Humiliation goaltender Luke Smit. But with just a minute-and-a-half gone from the 2nd frame, speedy Humiliation defenceman Andrew Blakeley intercepted an errant pass and wheeled in on Jokers backup netminder Marc Hickox, knotting proceedings at 1-1. Despite an offensive flurry that saw a combined 3rd period shots total of 16, neither tender allowed another biscuit into their buttery, setting up a winner-take-all scenario for next Saturday's decisive sequel.

Next up was the opening game of the 2nd-place Wheatfield Souldiers vs. 7th-place Parkdale Porcupines series which, given the results of the two teams' regular season matches (a win and a loss for each) had the potential to be a coin toss. Porcupines rookie Daniel Tremblay was the first to call "heads" as he made good on an odd man rush with linemate Mike Clark to get the Quills on the board just five minutes into the game. Blueline scoring threat Adam Thrasher made it 2-0 just over three minutes later, this time with the assistance of Jay Browne and Brian Bentley (the latter already sporting a playoff beard of near Burnsian proportions). Then, with the Souldiers shorthanded due to a late 2nd period interference call, Todd Moffat combined with Porcs newbie David Vitt to pot a buzzer-beating insurance marker. Jay Ward would get Burton's Boys on the board late in the final frame (with Mike Harkness assisting), but that was all the bananas the tally man would need to count as the Porcupines peeled away with a 2-point lead in the series.

The Gas Station Islanders got the early jump in their opening game vs. the Brockton Rockets, finishing out the 1st period with a trio of unanswered goals from Cam Collyer (2) and John Pickernell. After a scoreless 2nd frame, GSI struck again, this time with Nick Purdon putting the Blueshirts up by a commanding 4-0 margin. But it was all Rockets from that point on, specifically Rockets scoring threat James Neilson, who tallied twice in just over two minutes to halve the Gassers' lead and cast a cloudy pall of precipitation on their procession. However, Isles goaltender Sean Markle marshalled a closed-door-policy from that point on, sealing the deal at 4-2 and 2 point lead in the series.

And in the final game of the night, after giving up a two-goal 1st-period lead, the Beau's Beer Hack rallied to stave off the Parkdale Hockey Lads to the tune of 5-3. Louis Durand and Mike Woodgate got the reigning UUHA Champions on the scoreboard first, putting the Hack ahead 2-0 going into the 2nd. Lads' snipers Kyle Welton and Ian Seeton matched that in the middle frame, though, setting up a decisive 3rd period with the score tied at a pair apiece. But Chris Cacciotti, Lance Moreton and Aaron Foster factored heavily into that decision making process, putting the Hack far enough ahead that Welton's late goal (his second of the game) did little to effect the final outcome as the Beau's Boys booked a 2 point series lead.

The 2017 UUHA Playoffs continue this coming Saturday, March 4 with four series-deciding games on the schedule at Upper Canada College. Should any of those games end with the teams tied for series points, a winner will be determined by way of a shootout.
