Jokers, Souldiers Post Wins Ahead of Patch Break

TORONTO - The Jokers Hockey Club mounted a 3rd-period blitz to better the Parkdale Lads 4-1, while the Wheatfield Souldiers posted a 4-2 victory over the exhibition Subtlestars in Saturday, Oct. 3 UUHA action. Meanwhile, the Humiliation and Gas Station Islanders wrapped things up in advance of a 13-day break skating to a hard-fought 3-3 tie. The league now takes a scheduled break for the Patch Cup (Saturday, Oct. 10 in Peterborough, ON) and the Thanksgiving weekend.

The UUHA made its downtown debut Saturday afternoon at Toronto's venerable Varsity Arena. The 2:00 PM match saw a shortened Jokers bench (just seven skaters) face off against a Lads side bereft of at least three key players as well. Despite the spread the current standings spread, the teams remained at a scoreless deadlocked until the four-minute mark of the 2nd period when Lads rookie Dennis Zammit completed a passing play involving teammates Mike Frolick and Yawd Sylvester to put the rubber past Jokers netminder Burke Lawrence. However, Jokers sniper Mike Takacs (shaken but not stirred by a 1st-period collision with Lads forward Tommy Gough) answered back before the buzzer, picking up a long pass from Burke and knotting proceedings at 1-1. The goal was scored shorthanded as the Jokers were killing a too-many-men penalty (the only penalty of the contest for both teams).

The 3rd period belonged to the Jokers, as Takacs picked up his game-winning second goal, followed by tallies from Eric Andrews and Tyler Stewart. Andrews, Takacs, Paul Irving, Pete Windrem and Dennis Kane garnered assists on the score sheet, as well.

Takacs picked up 1st Star honours, while Lads goalie Luis Freitas earned 2nd Star for stopping all but four of a whopping 33 shots - most of them quality chances. Jokers defenceman Duncan Fremlin was named the game's 3rd Star.

Meanwhile, UUHA action continued unabated over at Upper Canada College. The evening's first game saw the Wheatfield Souldiers return after a week-long break to edge an exhibition squad consisting primarily of members of Toronto's storied Morningstars Hockey Club. Souldiers scoring leader Kelly McCaig kept his streak alive, potting the team's first two goals in the opening frame. He was later joined on the scoring sheet by teammates Steve Harkness and Keven Magura, whose empty-net goal iced the cake with less than a minute remaining in the game. Chris Topping and Mike MacMillan were responsible for goals by the exhibition side (dubbed the Subtlestars due to the combination of red Morningstars and Subtle Tendencies jerseys present on the ice).

The game saw numerous players make their UUHA debuts, including Souldiers goalie John Sutton who minded the Subtlestars net (his Souldiers counterpart Jordan Stewart was in for the win at the other end of the ice). Winnipeg defence prospect Jon Weier put in a solid performance, as did Souldiers spare Ariel Cabalin. Chris Nelson and the Egli brothers, meanwhile, debuted with the Subtlestars.

The evening's final game saw the Humiliation and Gas Station Islanders both garner single points as the teams skated to a 3-3 draw. GSI scoring was handled by George Collins, Rob Weir and Stephen Boyd. Humiliation goals came compliments of Eric Partington, Paul Morris and Paul Aucoin. Current UUHA points leader Stephen Cribbin maintained his place atop the leader board with an assist on the Aucoin goal. Weir and Klint Davies earned Stars-of-the-game honours for GSI (3rd and 1st respectively), while the Orange Tide's captain Mike Thompson was named 2nd Star after assisting on his team's first two goals.

UUHA action resumes Saturday, Oct. 17.
