Humiliation, Souldiers, Hack Post Oddly Lopsided Victories

TORONTO - The Humiliation plucked the Screamin' Jays 6-2, the Wheatfield Souldiers buried the Dufferin Groove 7-2 and the Beau's Beer Hack heckled the Jokers by a 6-1 margin, as the UUHA experienced one of the most lopsided scoring nights in recent memory.

While parity has thus far been the thematic rule of the 2016/17 Regular Season, this past Saturday night proved to be the exception as the three winning teams combined for a 14-point margin over their opponents, including the typically high-scoring Jokers, who laid claim to the President's Cup just the previous evening at Maple Leaf Gardens in the first of a rarely scheduled pair of back-to-back games.

Saturday's opening contest pitted the struggling and injury-depleted Humiliation against a mixed-squad Screamin' Jays team backstopped by goaltender Marc Hickox. Despite having registered a shutout in his previous outing between the jays' pipes, Hickox was tested early and didn't perform as well on the test (a contributing factor being he didn't have Adam Thrasher minding the Jays' blueline this time). By the time the feathers cleared, Glenn Gummerson (2G, 1A), Stephen Cribbin (3A), Alex Hewitt (2G) and Luke Scheer (1G, 1A) had registered multiple point nights for the Humiliation, while five other players picked up single points. Nick Purdon and Chuck Molgat both scored for the Jays, with Purdon and Simoon Evers credited with assists as well. Goaltender Andrew Masse (on loan from the GTHLA's Ultimate Warriors) turned in a solid performance for the victorious side, stopping all but two of the shots he faced.

Though currently occupying the last spot in the standings, the Humiliation could finish out the Regular Season in as high as 3rd place, given that a mere 2.5 points separates the 3rd and 8th place teams.

Though coming into their game vs. the Dufferin Groove with the league's most anemic Goals For Average (and, contrarily, the stingiest GAA), the Wheatfield Souldiers' sticks came alive early, particularly that of sophomore Souldier Scott Pettus, who registered three goals within the first nine-and-a-half minutes of the game. As the goals were scored within the same period, and concurrently without any other scoring taking place between them, the feat is believed to be the Souldiers' first-ever natural-natural hat trick. Brad Sveistrup, Eric Toth (2) and Chuck Molgat also tallied for the winning side, while Colin Dyche and Jeff Boulton scored for the Groove.

The Wheatfield Souldiers remain in 4th place in the UUHA standings with two games remaining on the Regular Season calendar.

And in the final game of the night, the 1st-place Jokers endured their worst loss of the season, falling 6-1 to reigning league Champions, the Beau's Beer Hack. Chris Cacciotti (2G, 2A), Tim Bolen (1G, 3A) and Chris Barkley (1G, 1A) each turned in multiple-point performances while five other Hack regulars (as well as consummate spare Rodney Merchant) made the points column with singles. Joel Lacoursiere potted the lone goal for the Jokers (with sniper Steve Levine having missed on a penalty shot late in the game), while the Hack's Aaron Brophy got the better of the goaltending duel with Burke Lawrence.

UUHA action continues next Saturday, Feb. 11 with the Hack returning to the ice to take on the Parkdale Hockey Lads at 7:00 pm, followed by the Humiliation and Rockets at 8:00 pm. The 9:00 pm game will feature the Wheatfield Souldiers and Parkdale Porcupines capping off the second-last Saturday of the Regular Season. The UUHA Playoffs get underway on Saturday, Feb. 25 at Upper Canada College.
