TORONTO - The Wheatfield Souldiers defeated the Parkdale Lads 4-0 this past Saturday night while the Humiliation edged the Gas Station Islanders 2-1 and the Dufferin Groove shutout the Beau's Beer Hack 3-0, with all three goals scored in the 3rd period by veteran Groover, Ted Neale.
The Lads' defeat bought to a grinding halt the team's four-game winning streak, which had established a franchise record for the 16-year-old squad. For the Souldiers, the game marked the second consecutive contest in which they prevented their opponent from scoring a single goal. Goaltender Sheldon Shurland registered his league-leading fourth shutout of the season, improving his Goals Against Average to a miserly 1.22 in the process. Souldiers goalscoring was handled by Eric Toth, Chuck Molgat, Mike Harkness and Jay Ward, with Toth credited with the game-winning goal, and Molgat potting his tally shorthanded.
The Gas Station Islanders were first on the scoreboard in their match vs. the Humiliation, with John Pickernell solving goaltender Luke Smit at the 9:15 mark of the opening frame. Dominic Chartier and Yan Bourassa assisted on the goal. That lead held up for under a minute, though, as Humiliation forward Aaron Knight combined with Stephen Cribbin and Andrew Blakeley to knot things up at the 8:45 mark of the 1st. Later, with just 2:22 remaining in the game, Humiliation rookie Rob Thompson converted made good on a feed from his brother Mike Thompson to score the game winner. Cribbin picked up his second assist of the night on that one.
UUHA action continues this Saturday, Jan. 21 with five games on the slate, including a pair of late afternoon tilts at Maple Leaf Gardens featuring the Souldiers and GSI at 5:00 pm, and the Rockets and Hack immediately afterward. Upper Canada College will host the Jokers and Screamin' Jays at 7:00 pm, the Lads and Groove at 8:00 pm and the Porcupines and Humiliation at 9:00 pm.
