TORONTO - The Gas Station Islanders and Parkdale Porcupines both potted shorthanded, game-winning tallies, while the Dufferin Groove and Wheatfield Souldiers skated to a fast-paced scoreless tie this past Saturday night at Upper Canada College.
Ian McRobie scored unassisted with under two minutes remaining in the third period to put his Islanders up 3-1 over the Humiliation despite being shorthanded at the time. Humiliation forward Jimmy Sioukas responded with a mere 15 seconds on the clock to halve his side's deficit, but the Gassers went on to post their second win of the campaign, bettering their record to 2-2-0 in the process. Luke Scheer also tallied for the Humiliation, while the other two GSI goals were got by Cam Collyer and first-time spare Gary Edwards. Edwards assisted on GSI's first goal, as well, while Stephen Cribbin posted a pair of helpers for the Orange Tide.
Todd Moffat was the magic man for the Porcupines, tallying shorthanded late in the 2nd frame - a goal that would stand up as the game-winner over reigning league champs, the Beau's Beer Hack. Moffat also scored the Pines' first goal, while setting up Brian Bentley's tally at the halfway point of the match. Meanwhile, Chris Cacciotti accounted for both Hack goals. Curiously, all five goals were scored in the 2nd period. The win snapped a three-game slide for the Porcupines while demoting the Hack in the standings with a record of 1-1-1 on the season.
Goaltenders Sheldon Shurland and Mario Pistone posted matching shutouts for the Wheatfield Souldiers and Dufferin Groove, respectively, in a game that was short on scoring but not action. The Groove edged their opponent in the shots department, registering 19 chances to the Souldiers' 16 attempts, including a buzzer-beating save by Pistone on forward Jon Weier who managed a last-second backhand that appeared destined for twine bulging before being corralled to maintain the double goose eggs.
UUHA action continues this coming Friday, Oct. 21 with the Jokers returning to action against the Groove in an evening tilt (8:00 pm) at Maple Leaf Gardens. The following evening sees the Hack face off against the Brockton Rockets at 7:00 pm at Upper Canada College, followed by the lads and GSI. The evening's 9:00 pm game will feature the Porcupines going for two in a row, while the Humiliation attempt to return to the win column.
