Masked Mend: GSI's Dominic Chartier and Joker Charlie Rishor attend to the mask of goalie Sean Markle midway through Tuesday night's UUHA Regular Season finale at McCormick Arena.
TORONTO - The Gas Station Islanders scored early and often, and goaltender Sean Markle turned aside 23 of 24 shots to lead his squad to a 6-1 victory over the 1st-place Jokers Hockey Club this past Tuesday night at McCormick Arena. The match represented the final game of the 2015/16 UUHA Regular Season for both teams, although the results had no effect on the final standings or ceding for the Playoffs, which commence Saturday, Feb. 27 at Upper Canada College.
The Islanders solved Jokers goaltender Marc Hickox three times in the 1st period, including an Ian McRobie lamp-lighter less than a minute into the game. Dominic Chartier and Yan Bourassa also netted 1st-period goals, while Cam Collyer was responsible for a pair of tallies in the middle frame, both of which were scored unassisted after picking off errant Jokers passes. Seth Singer netted the final goal for the Isles, while Ted Bisaillion spoiled Markle's shutout attempt with just three minutes remaining in the game.
Jokers forward Steve Levine, who entered the game two goals back of league scoring leader, Aaron Foster (13), was unable to close ground on the Beau's Beer Hack sniper. However, Jokers forward Gary Rideout Jr. finished out the campaign atop the assists (15) and points (23) leader-board columns.
With their most lopsided defeat of the season now in the books, the Jokers will focus on tightening things up as they prepare to face the Parkdale Hockey Lads in the opening round of the UUHA Playoffs. The Gassers, meanwhile, will look to maintaining the momentum of their Tuesday night performance as they go skate-to-skate with the Hack in their two-game playoff series.
