TORONTO - The Beau's Beer Hack claimed 1st place in the UUHA standings this past Saturday night by defeating the Humiliation 4-2. Meanwhile, the Wheatfield Souldiers' 4-1 win over the Dufferin Groove earned the victors a 2nd-place berth on the leaderboard. An 8:00 PM contest between the Parkdale Porcupines and the Brockton Rockets resulted in a 1-1 draw.
Jimmy Sioukas' unassisted tally at the 1:00 mark drew the Humiliation even with the Hack (Blake Moreton had opened the scoring five minutes prior), but the Hack would respond with three 2nd-period goals to put a figurative skate to the neck of their opponent. Stefan Barkley and Gavin Patterson would claim responsibility for those goals - the latter with a pair. Andrew Blakely would combine with Will Hewitt and Nicos Fassler for a late 2nd-frame goal to make it 4-2, but that would be all the scoring in the game as the Humiliation dropped their second consecutive match. The Hack, meanwhile, extended their winning streak to four games.
Porcupines' James Walker was the lone goal scorer for his side on Saturday night, solving Rockets goaltender Jon Dickson at the 5:30 mark of the 2nd period on a play involving Adam Thrasher and Brian Bentley. Ryan Olfert responded early in the 3rd, though, lighting the lamp behind Pines' goalie Andrew Stirk off a feed from James Neilson. The draw was the second consecutive tie for the Brockton Boys, while the Porcupines extended their unbeaten streak to three games. The Quills have only allowed two goals over the course of those three games.
Dufferin Groove's Jeremy Wilton corralled a juicy rebound to put the puck past Souldiers goaltender Sheldon Shurland at the midway point of the opening frame in the final match of the night. That would be the only scoring from the Groove, though, as the Souldiers responded with four unanswered tallies to start the year off with a win. Steve Harkness, Chuck Molgat and Eric Toth would each find the back of the net - Toth on two occasions. Helpers were awarded to Brad Sveistrup, Mike Harkness (2), Joey Serlin, Toth and Rodney Merchant. The win (along with a bonus half point for a penalty-free game) saw the Souldiers move into 2nd place in the standings and scheduled to meet the 1st place Hack next Saturday afternoon at Maple Leaf Gardens.
In addition to the Hack/Souldiers 1:00 PM game at the Gardens, the Rockets and Gas Station Islanders will face off under the iconic Carleton Street dome next Saturday afternoon at 2:00 PM. Later that evening will see Upper Canada College play host to the Humiliation vs. Dufferin Groove at 7:00 PM while the Parkdale Lads return to action vs. the visiting Meat at 8:00 PM. The final game of the night will see the Jokers attempt to recapture top spot in the standings as they take on the Porcupines at 9:00 PM.
