Toronto - The Parkdale Hockey Lads and Parkdale Porcupines both made the win column for just the second time on the season this past Saturday night, defeating the Gas Station Islanders and Wheatfield Souldiers, respectively. Meanwhile, reigning UUHA Champions the Beau's Beer Hack claimed yet another victory, this time over the Dufferin Groove, whom the Hack bettered 3-2.
Lads forward Jason Abrams got his side off to an early lead with an unassisted tally three-and-a-half minutes in, scooping up a clearing attempt and beating spare Gas Station Islanders goaltender Mike Wilk with a hard, low surprise shot. Ian Seeton bolstered that with another goal just two minutes later, combining with spare Eric Toth for the tally. Then, with five minutes to go in the 1st frame, veteran Lads forward Tommy Gough corralled a long lob pass from Fabian Ruzic to bust in unmolested on the beakaway and deliver his side the 3-0 lead. The Islanders would strike back in the middle frame, though, with goals from Ian McRobie (2) and Seth Singer, although another Seeton tally woould maintain the Lads two-goal lead heading into the 3rd period. Lads spare Chuck Molgat would convert the feed from behind the net from fellow spare Brad Sveistrup to regain some insurance, but GSI's Steve Boyd answered back less than two minutes later, blasting a Seth Singer feed past goaltender Luis Freitas to put proceedings back within one. But a hail Mary pass from Molgat to Toth would result in a crippling empty-net tally for the Lads which, despite another GSI goal from Boys with just 10 seconds left, would hold up as the game winner.
The following game saw the Porcupines return to action after a two-week break, this time to face off against the Wheatfield Souldiers. The 1st period would see no scoring from either side, but come the 10:15 mark of the 2nd frame the Porcs would make it onto the scoreboard thanks to a fortunate deflection off a Souldier's ankle and into the net behind goaltender Mike Wilk. Todd Moffat was credited with the goal, having executed the initial shot that found Wilk's pad before caromming in. An empty-net marker (scored by Ivan Kredl) with nine seconds remaining comprised the Porcs' second tally.
The Dufferin Groove came within a tally of overcoming a three-goal deficit against the soaring Hack on Saturday night. Chris Barkley and league scoring leader Aaron Foster came up with tallies in the 1st period of the game, before spare Neal Borutskie seemed to pretty much ice things with the 3-0 goal early in the final frame. But the Groove weren't done, as evidenced by late goals from both Jeff Boulton and Jason Aylsworth, the latter scoring with just over half-a-minute remaining in the game. The Hack was able to hold on there long enough to secure the two points, though, as they overtook the Jokers for the lead in the UUHA standings with an impressive record of 5-1-3. The Jokers, however, enjoy a game in hand over the Hack and will have an opportunity to regain pole position this coming Saturday when they face the Brockton Rockets in a 1:00 pm matinee contest at Maple Leaf Gardens.
This coming Saturday also sees the Lads face off against the Porcupines at Noon at Maple Leaf Gardens, while the Souldiers and Humiliation go toe-to-toe at the Gardens at 2:00 pm. The Groove takes to the MLG ice vs, the Gas Station Islanders at 3:00 pm. UUHA action wraps up for the year on Tuesday, Dec. 22 at McCormick Arena with a special one-off match between the Jokers and Islanders at 8:00 pm. League action resumes on Saturday, Jan. 2 at Upper Canada College.
