TORONTO - The Wheatfield Souldiers, Humiliation and Beau's Beer Hack combined for 18 goals this past Saturday night en route to decisive victories over the Parkdale Lads, Gas Station Islanders and Brockton Rockets, respectively.
Souldiers points leader Eric Toth got Burton's Boys on the board early in the opening frame, combining with linemate Brad Sveistrup to beat Lads netminder Lis Freitas low on the glove side. Toth potted another five minutes later, this time from Sveistrup and defenceman Chuck Molgat. Parkdale's Jason Abrams halved the Souldiers' lead three minutes later, though, lifting a feed from Fernando Freitas over the shoulder of spare goaltender Aaron Brophy. But a pair of 2nd-period tallies from rushing defenceman Derek Domingos (the first scored shorthanded, and the second on a lob-pass breakaway) reestablished a more substantial Souldiers' lead. Lads veteran Fabian Ruzic, however, would pot his first goal of the season (assisted by Mike Frolick and Tommy Gough) to get his side back within a pair. Cue versatile Souldiers forchecker Rodney Merchant, though, who made good on a behind-the-net feed from Mike Harkness to light the red lamp for the fifth time for the Wheaties. Additional goals from the Lads' Tom Nesbitt and the Souldiers' Jon Weier did little to effect the outcome as the teams shook hands on a 6-3 final score.
The Lads (1-7-0) will have an opportunity to move out of the basement this coming Saturday, Dec. 12 when they face off against the Islanders (4-3-1) at 7:00 pm at Upper Canada College. The Souldiers (5-1-1) are scheduled to play the Parkdale Porcupines (1-5-1) immediately afterward at 8:00 pm.
Beau's Beer Hack forwards Aaron Foster, Chris Cacciotti and Mike Woodgate were the three amigos in their squad's 7-3 romp over the Brockton Rockets this past Saturday night, each collecting a trio of appearances on the game sheet. Woodgate and Foster scored and assisted on each others' 1st period goals, while Cacciotti set up Foster's second tally, along with a marker for Doug Graham late in the 2nd frame. Graham returned the favour early in the 3rd, finding Cacciotti net-side to solve Rockets goalie Chris Kourtis with a wrister. Oliver Sutherns, Dustin Harris and Michael Wilcox managed to solve Hack goalie Aaron Brophy in the 1st and 3rd periods, but three goals would not be enough for the win on this night. The Rockets (3-4-1) are now one game above .500 as they take a week off before returning to action at Maple Leaf Gardens on Saturday, Dec. 19 for a tilt with the first-place Jokers. The Hack, meanwhile, are scheduled to take on the Dufferin Groove next Saturday at UCC.
The streaking Humiliation (6-2-1) continued their winning-column residency this past Saturday night, this time downing the Gas Station Islanders in pursuit of the league-leading Jokers. Following this past Saturday night's 5-2 win - the Humiliation's 4th consecutive victory - the team is now just a single point back of the Funniest Team on Ice which leads the league with 14 points. However, the Jokers (6-1-1) do have a game in hand on the Orange Tide. Jimmy Sioukas collected four assists on Saturday night, while Luke Moretti, Mike Thompson and Stephen Cribbin each enjoyed multiple-point outings as well.
The Humiliation next sees action on Saturday, Dec. 19 when they take on the Souldiers in a 2:00 pm matinee contest at Maple Leaf Gardens.
