Win Streak Ends But Funniest Team On Ice Remains Unbeaten

The Gas Station Islanders unveiled their new 3rd sweaters at Maple Leaf Gardens this past Saturday afternoon. So far, the team remains unbeaten in their new duds, as they skated to a 3-3 draw with the Beau's Beer Hack.

TORONTO - The Jokers Hockey Club had its five-game winning streak halted by the Wheatfield Souldiers this past Saturday afternoon at Maple Leaf Gardens as the two teams skated to a 2-2 tie under the iconic Carleton Street dome. However, the Funniest Team on Ice (now 5-0-1) still maintains top spot in the UUHA standings while enjoying a six-game points streak for one of the best starts in the franchise's storied history.

Veteran Souldiers defenceman Keven Magura opened the scoring at the 7:01 mark of the 1st period with a hard wrister from the high slot that seemed to surprise goaltender Burke Lawrence along the ice. (The game was Magura's first of the season since spending the past two months on the injured reserve list.) Forward Eric Toth and defenceman Scott Montgomery assisted on the tally. Toth made it 2-0 less than three minutes later, combining with linemate Mike Harkness on a breakout set up by defenceman Chuck Molgat. That was all the scoring the Souldiers would do, though, as the Jokers went on the offensive with a late 2nd period marker scored shorthanded by Steve Levine and assisted by Gary Rideout Jr. Rideout would pot one of his own early in the final frame to tie things up at 2-2, which is where things would remain at the final buzzer.

Up next was the Beau's Beer Hack (now 2-1-3) and Gas Station Islanders, the latter looking resplendent as they debuted their new 3rd jerseys styled in the distinct bleu, blanc et rouge of the Montreal Canadiens. It took just one minute for Hack forward Aaron Foster to claim the honour of being the first player to score against the Gassers (4-1-1) in their new unis, as he combined with linemate Louis Durand to solve goalie Sean Markle. Dylan Hudecki responded a few minutes later, though, knotting things up with the help of Dominic Chartier. The tit-for-tat scoring continued into the balance of the period, first with Joe McGinty putting the Hackers up (with Tim Bolen and Chris Cacciotti assisting), then with Chartier tying things up again (with the aid of Brian Nevin and Seth Singer). Nevin would combine with Chartier early in the 3rd to reverse the scoring trend, before Cacciotti replied unassisted to lock things in at 3-3. That was it for scoring, as the two teams settled settled for a tie and a handshake. Markle picked up 1st star honours for stopping a remarkable 39 of 42 shots off of Hack sticks.

Spectators hoping for a clear winner among the afternoon's contenders wouldn't leave disappointed, as the Humiliation waited until the last few minutes of the 3rd period to pounce on the Brockton Rockets and skate away with a 3-1 decision. Rockets scoring leader James Neilson would draw first blood for his side, combining with Oliver Sutherns and Jason Pilling to solve spare goalie Aaron Brophy (on loan from the Hack) five minutes into the match. Humiliation forward Stephen Cribbin drew things back to even a couple of shifts later, though, hooking up with captain Mike Thompson and Luke Scheer to get one past Brockton goaltender Karanvir Singh. Later, with just over five minutes remaining in the 3rd, Scheer would convert a play with Cribbin and defenceman Andrew Blakely for the go-ahead marker. Then, with under a minute remaining and the Rockets net empty, Scheer struck again, this time with the assistance of Cribbin and Clint Whitworth. The win improved the Humiliation's season record to 3-2-1 which is good enough for a share of 4th place in the standings. The Rockets, who haven't found the win column since late September, are not too far behind, though, with a current record of 2-3-1.

UUHA action continues next Saturday, Nov. 14 with a one-off 1:00 PM matinee contest at Maple Leaf Gardens featuring the Parkdale Hockey Lads taking on the Beau's Beer Hack. Later that evening will see three more games slated for Upper Canada College as the Parkdale Porcupines face off against the Dufferin Groove, the Jokers take on the Humiliation and the Souldiers go up against the Islanders.
