TORONTO - The Humiliation overcame a two-goal deficit to edge the Parkdale Porcupines 3-2 on the Olympic ice at Upper Canada College this past Saturday afternoon to remain unbeaten two weeks into the calendar. Meanwhile the Jokers and Gas Station Islanders remained perfect on the new season, as well, downing the Meat and Dufferin Groove (respectively) in exhibition contests. The final match of the night saw the Brockton Rockets double up on the Parkdale Hockey Lads 2-1 to get back on an even footing in the standings with a 1-1-0 record while leaving the Lads still looking for their first win of the campaign.
Porcs defenceman Matt Latreille combined with Jay Browne midway through the opening frame to solve Humiliation goaltender Luke Smit for the 1-0 lead. Blue-liner Adam Thrasher would add some unassisted insurance before the first horn sounded, making it 2-0 Quills with his league-leading third goal of the season. But the Humiliation's offence came alive late in the 2nd period as Jimmy Sioukas and Glenn Gummerson tallied a minute-or-so apart to tie proceedings at a pair each. Early in the 3rd (a period that saw the Orange Tide outshoot their opponent 11-4) captain Mike Thompson teamed up with Luke Sheer for the go-ahead goal, which ultimately stood up as the game winner. Despite the loss, Porcupine's goalie Dean Bentley put in an exceptional performance, turning aside 22 of 25 Humiliation shots.
A 2nd period power-play goal potted by Brockton Rockets veteran Ryan Olfert would serve as the difference in that squad's game against the Parkdale Lads. Jason Pilling and Jason Brown helped set up the tally which was the second of the game to get past the Lads spare goaltender - the first coming off the stick of former Rockets full-timer Kiryl Nikifaru at the 10:20 mark of the middle frame. Lads defenceman Nick Hehn would get his side within a single marker partway through the 3rd, solving goaltender Karanvir Singh shorthanded and unassisted. But the 2-1 score would holdup, giving the Lads an 0-2-0 record to contemplate heading into an off weekend.
And a pair of exhibition contests saw both visiting teams outplayed by their host opponents. The Gas Station Islanders claimed two of the three periods of their match with a spare-studded Meat side, registering four goals on the night. Both Meat tallies were scored compliments of Luke Moretti, on loan from the Humiliation for the occasion. And the Jokers had the last laugh in their game vs. the Dufferin Groove, blanking the opposition 2-0 as goalie Burke Lawrence claimed his first shutout of the season.
UUHA action continues this coming Saturday, Sept. 26 with the Jokers and GSI scheduled to meet on the Olympic ice for a 5:30 matinee match. The Hack and Humiliation will go skate-to-skate at 7:00 PM while the Porcupines and Rockets take to the ice the following hour. The night's last contest will feature the Wheatfield Souldiers and Dufferin Groove in the 9:00 PM game. All four matches will be played at UCC.
