Souldiers, Jokers, Humiliation and GSI Post Opening-Night Wins

Beau's Beer Hack sniper Aaron Foster (left) gets set to faces off against Joker's call-up Derek Scott as the season-opening rematch between last year's Finalists gets underway this past Saturday night at UCC.

TORONTO - The UUHA kicked off another Regular Season this past Saturday night at Upper Canada College with last season's President's Cup-winning Wheatfield Souldiers posting the first win of the new campaign, edging the Brockton Rockets 2-1 on the venue's Olympic-sized rink. Shortly thereafter the Jokers got some redemption on the Beau's Beer Hack, who defeated the funniest team on ice in last season's Championship Final to claim the UUHA title. This time the Jokers posted a decisive 6-2 victory, although the shiny hardware remains in the care of their opponents, at least for another seven months or so. The Humiliation also made it into the win column this past Saturday, bettering the Parkdale Hockey Lads by a score of 2-0, while the Gas Station Islanders lived up to their preseason billing as the team most likely to improve over last season by eaking out a 4-3 victory over the Parkdale Porcupine

Veteran Wheatfield Souldiers forward Wes Gerbrandt netted the first goal of the new season by getting a rebound past Rockets rookie goaltender Jon Dickson late in the opening frame of the teams' 5:30 pm game. Then, midway through the 3rd period, recently-returned Souldiers alumnus Jay Ward converted a feed from teammates Eric Toth and Rodney Merchant to put Burton's Boys up by a pair. But Rockets speedster Dustin Harris tallied a mere minute-and-half later, combining with James Neilson and Michael Goldrosen to keep things within one. That, however, is how the night's first match would end.

The rematch of the previous season's Final saw the Jokers get on the board first after a goal from the stick of Gary Rideout Jr. Captain Ted Bisaillion would double up a minute-or-so later before being answered by Hack man Aaron Foster who solved veteran Jokers goaltender Burke Lawrence unassisted and without even the benefit of leaving a tip. Foster, along with Mike Woodgate, would set up Gavin Paterson later in the game for another Hack goal, but it wouldn't be enough as the Jokers cruised to a 6-2 win with additional goals by the likes of Rideout, Mike Takacs, Joel Lacoursiere and Tyler Stewart.

In the Humiliation/Lads contest it was veteran team members Mike Thompson and Nicos Fassler putting the Humiliation up by a pair despite some notably solid goaltending on the part of Luis Freitas. Luke Smit collected his first shutout of the season in the affair, though.

And the Gas Station Islanders saw lively sticks in the hands of Scott Adams, Stephen Boyd, Nick Purdon and Cam Collyer (whose 3rd period tally would stand up as the game winner) as the Gassers went on the edge the Porcupines by a razor-thin margin of 4-3. Adam Thrasher had two for the Porcs while rookie Mike Clark got himself on point-a-game pace for the Quills.

UUHA action contiinues this coming Saturday at UCC with the Humiliation and Porcupines facing off on the big ice at 5:30, followed by the Gas Station Islanders and the Meat at 7:00 pm on the adjacent Eaton rink. The Jokers will attempt to string two wins together vs. the Dufferin Groove at 8:00 pm while the Lads and Rockets both seek their first win of the season at 9:00 pm.
