TORONTO - The Parkdale Porcupines defeated the Brockton Rockets 4-2 this past Saturday night to secure a berth in the April 11 UUHA Bronze Medal Game. Meanwhile, the Wheatfield Souldiers edged the Gas Station Islanders in a shootout (2-3) as the President's Cup winners stamped their Bronze Medal Game ticket as well.
Wheatfield Souldiers forward Scott Montgomery opened the scoring late in the 1st period, patiently converting a feed from defenceman Jimmy Murphy to beat GSI goalie Sean Markle clean on the stick side. Kelly McCaig made it 2-0 late in the the following period, intercepting a GSI clearing attempt then moving laterally to set up a screen for the net-bulging marker. The Souldiers appeared to score again off the ensuing faceoff, but Markle successfully argued he did not yet have his glove back on when the puck was dropped as officials quashed what might've been the game-deciding goal.
The Islanders sticks came alive in the 3rd period, first with Dominic Chartier completing a nifty play with Nick Purdon, then with Ian McRobie netting the game-tying goal with just 3:20 remaining in the game. Still ties at the end of regulation time, the match would go to a shootout, with three players form each team selected to shoot. Unfortunately for GSI, rookie phenom Sean Dunn was ineligible to participate as he was serving a tripping minor at game's end. As the Home team, GSI elected to shoot first sending Chartier in to successfully solve goalie John Sutton. Mike Harkness would shoot for the Souldiers and, like the next Souldiers shooter Jimmy Murphy, would fail to score on Markle. Ditto for the next two GSI shooters. Brad Sveistrup, however, would score, sending the shootout to an extra round during which Eric Toth (whose goal it was that had been called back earlier in the game) was the only one to tally, winning the game for the Souldiers in the process.
In the Porcupines/Rockets game, it was the Porcs who went up early taking a 2-0 lead into the 2nd period on unassisted goals by youngster Ivan Kredl (fresh off the IR) and offensively-talented blueliner Adam Thrasher. Paul Shields got his side within one, though, converting a play from Rob Campbell just a minute into the middle frame. Ivan Kredl would restore the two-goal lead three minutes later, though, this time with the assistance of Corey Thorn and Chris Valente. David Dobson would get the Rockets close once more (with Joseph Desjardins assisting), but Corey Thorn would seal the deal for the Quills potting an empty-netter in the dying seconds of the contest.
UUHA Playoffs action takes a week-long break for the Easter Weekend (and Super Cup) but resumes on Saturday, April 11 at Upper Canada College with Lads and Humiliation meeting in Consolation Final at 7:00 PM, the Porcupines and Souldiers facing off in the Bronze Medal Game at 8:00 PM and the Safety First Jokers and Beau's Beer Hack going up against each other at 9:00 PM in the Championship Final.
