Hack, Jokers, Porcupines, Souldiers Advance to Winners Bracket

TORONTO - The Beau's Beer Hack, Jokers Hockey Club, Parkdale Porcupines and Wheatfield Souldiers won their respective 1st Round playoff series this past Saturday night to advance to the 2nd Round Winners Bracket and a shot at the UUHA Championship Final. The Humiliation, Gas Station Islanders, Parkdale Hockey Lads and Brockton Rockets, meanwhile, will now compete for berths in the Bronze Medal Match.

The 2nd Round match-ups will see the Hack take on the Souldiers for the second consecutive year, while the Porcupines and Jokers will go skate-to-skate for a shot at a spot in the big game. Like the opening round of the UUHA Playoffs, the 2nd Round will consist of a two-game, total-goals aggregate series for each pair of contenders. Last year, the Souldiers came back from a first-game loss to the Hack to tie the series in the second game and ultimately prevail in a shootout. Neither the Hack nor the Porcupines have won the UUHA Championship to date. The Jokers, however, have claimed the Cup on two previous occasions (2011 and 2013). The Souldiers defeated the Humiliation in last year's Final to claim their third UUHA Championship.

The Humiliation (who had previously made in through to the Championship Final on three different occasions) will now take on the Rockets in the 2nd Round, while the Lads and Islanders will renew post-season acquaintances in their series. The 2nd Round gets underway on Saturday, March 14 at Upper Canada College with four games on the schedule beginning at 7:00 PM.

Of the four games played this past Saturday night, the second game of the Lads/Porcupines series made for the most dramatic scene. Down by a goal in the series (having given up a 3-0 lead in the opening match), the Lads appeared to be on the ropes after the Porcupines went up by one midway through the 2nd period on a goal by Corey Thorn. But despite some penalty trouble that saw the trailing side down a man on several occasions, Lads sniper Kyle Welton potted a pair of late tallies to win the game and tie up the series in the process. The game proceeded directly to a shootout (as prescribed by league rules) with the Porcupines edging the Lads by a goal on the fourth shot of the contest. Both Porcupines goaltender Andrew Stirk, and Lads goalie Luis Freitas, put in dynamic performances throughout the match turning aside 23 and 17 shots, respectively. The final score of the two-game aggregate series was 5-5, with the Porcupines advancing on a single-goal shootout victory.

The Jokers took a one-goal lead into the second and deciding game of their 1st Round series with the GSI and did not look back. Marc Hickox opened the scoring for the Funniest Team on Ice just three-and-a-half minutes into the game, combining with Joel Lacoursiere and Steve Levine to solve GSI back-up goaltender Matt Barber. Jokers veteran Adrian Cavan would be credited with another goal (which appeared to go in off a Gasser's stick) less than five minutes later. The always-dangerous pair of Mike Takacs and Levine potted another pair of 1st period goals as the team settled into a defensive cushion with a 4-0 lead, going on to win the game by the same score. Jokers goaltender Burke Lawrence picked up the shutout turning aside all 10 GSI attempts. The final score of this two-game aggregate series was 7-2.

Game 2 of the Souldiers/Rockets series was not without its dramatic moments, either. Leading the series by a goal coming into the match, the Rockets potted two goals on the first two plays of the game - the first scored unassisted just 40 seconds in by Jason Pilling, with another scored unassisted off the ensuing face-off by Rob Campbell. Both goals resulted from neutral-zone turnovers by the Souldiers, who suddenly found themselves having to better their opponent by at least four goals if they hoped to claim victory in the series. The first Souldiers marker came midway through the 1st period off the stick of defenceman Joey Serlin. Mike Harkness then combined with Derek Domingos early in the middle frame to knot the game up, followed by a Brad Sveistrup tally to tie the series at three goals per side. Then, with just over two minutes remaining in the 3rd period, Mike Harkness found Jon Weier in front of the Rockets net to claim the lead and victory in the series. Nathan Cardon faced 22 shots in the game while John Sutton, after letting in the first two Rockets attempts, turned aside the next 16 for the win. The final score of the Souldiers/Rockets two-game aggregate series was 5-4.

The Hack, who had edged the Humiliation by a single goal in the first game of their series, were up 2-0 by the end of the opening frame of the second match on goals by Mike Woodgate and Chris Barkley. Humiliation veteran Stephen Cribbin got his side within one early in the 3rd period, though, beating Hack goaltender Aaron Brophy with a hard shot along the ice just inside the right post. Despite a late onslaught that saw the Orange Tide register 13 shots in the 3rd period alone, though, a late marker by Aaron Foster would seal the deal for the Hack as they moved on to the 2nd Round Winners Bracket for the second consecutive season. Humiliation goaltender Luke Smit faced 24 shots in the game, while Brophy was tested on 20 occasions. The final score of the two-game aggregate series was 7-4.

The 2015 UUHA Playoffs resume on Saturday, March 14 with the Jokers and Porcupines taking to the ice at 7:00 PM, followed by the Rockets and Humiliation at 8:00 PM. The 9:00 PM game features the Hack and Souldiers, while the Lads and Islanders are scheduled to face off at 10:00 PM. All games take place at UCC's William B. Wilder Arena.
