Parity Central: Playoffs Opener Yields Quartet of 1-Goal Games

Half-dressed members of the Brockton Rockets and Wheatfield Souldiers look on as the Ryerson Rams and Guelph Gryphons start into a second period of sudden-death OT last Saturday evening at the Gardens.

TORONTO -The opening night of the 2015 UUHA Playoffs saw all four series' opening games decided by a single-goal margin. Also close was the fact at least one of the games nearly didn't end up being played.

A playoff match between the Ryerson Rams and Guelph Gryphons nearly derailed the opening night of the UUHA Playoffs at Maple Leaf Gardens as the two teams were tied 1-1 at the end of regulation time. According to the university league's policy, the game was to continue until a victor emerged, along with 15-minute breaks between as many full, 20-minute stop-time periods as necessary. The first UUHA game of the night, featuring the Wheatfield Souldiers and Brockton Rockets, was scheduled to being at 5:00 PM and was two minutes away from being postponed and rescheduled (by the teams' mutual consent) when the Gryphons scored at 5:28 PM. So the UUHA games went ahead, albeit approximately 45-minutes later than originally planned.

Despite the late starts all four games were played to completion with the Rockets edging the Souldiers 2-1, the Parkdale Porcupines posting a 4-3 comeback win over the Parkdale Lads, the Jokers bettering the Gas Station Islanders 3-2 and the Beau's Beer Hack getting by the Humiliation 4-3.

Speedy defenceman Andrew Blakeley registered a goal and a pair of assists for the Orange Tide, while Jim Sioukas picked up a couple of helpers. Aaron Foster completed a hat-trick for the Hack, and picked up the game-winning tally in the process, with just a minute remaining in the game.

Sniper Dominic Chartier and rookie Scott Adams lit the light for the Islanders, while usual Jokers suspects Charlie Rishor, Steve Levine and Gary Rideout Jr. did the same for their side. Burke Lawrence stopped 19 of 21 shots for the W while cross-ice counterpart Sean Markle turned aside a dozen of the 15 attempts he faced.

Lads veteran Simon Evers and Kyle Welton (2) had their squad up 3-0 by the end of the 2nd period, but Porcupines Corey Thorne and Adam Thrasher got their team off the ropes in the 3rd frame with a pair of goals each to take a one-goal lead in the two-game series.

Rockets winger Dustin Harris potted a power-play marker late in the 1st period to go up 1-0 before Souldiers' Eric Toth combined with Jimmy Murphy to tie things up. Michael Wilcox took advantage of a giveaway just over a minute later, though, to put his side up a goal.

The close opening-night results set the stage for what should be four hotly contested matches next Saturday, Feb. 28 at Upper Canada College. The results of those games will determine which four teams make it through to the Winners Bracket to maintain a shot at the UUHA Championship Cup, and which four teams duke it out for Bronze.

This coming Saturday's program has the Humiliation and Hack facing off against each other at 7:00 PM, followed by the Jokers and GSI at 8:00 PM. The Lads and Porcupines will skate to a resolution at 9:00 PM while the late game features the Rockets and Souldiers. All those games will take place at Upper Canada College.
