TORONTO - The Wheatfield Souldiers defeated the Parkdale Porcupines 3-1 this past Saturday night to claim their first-ever UUHA President's Trophy. The award (first officially presented last season to the Parkdale Hockey Lads) is given to the team finishing the Regular Season in 1st place. Forward Eric Toth scored all three Souldiers' goals, including a late empty-net insurance marker. Caitlin Thorne scored for the Porcupines, who nearly tied the game on a couple of occasions in the 3rd period. A tie would've seen the President's Trophy awarded to the Porcupines. The Jokers Hockey Club finished in top spot four consecutive times, beginning with the 2009/10 UUHA Regular Season.
The Wheatfield Souldiers will now face the Brockton Rockets in the opening round of the 2015 Playoffs beginning Saturday, Feb. 21 at Maple Leaf Gardens. The Porcupines will take on the Lads, who finished the Regular Season in 7th place.
In other Saturday night UUHA action, the Beau's Beer Hack and Brockton Rockets skated to a 4-4 draw in a back-and-forth match that saw the Hack leading 2-0 in the early goings on goals from Sean Cordner and Lance Moreton. Rockets Michael Goldrosen and James Neilson drew their side even before the 1st period was over, though. Then teammates Paul Shields and Dustin Harris added two ore for the Brockton Boys to take a two-goal lead. But the Hack's Tim Bolen would capitalize on a power-play opportunity to get back within one, followed by a game-knotting tally by spare Kyle McGowan just two minutes later.
The final contest of the night saw the Dufferin Groove defeat a mixed-squad of Screamin' Jays 5-1. while the Dufferin Groove downed the Screamin' Jays 5-1.Tim Freeman, Alex Lackovic, Bret Barnes, Todd Meaney and Chris Dinsdale all scored for the Groove, while Wes Gerbrandt managed the lone goal for the Jays. The game served as a schedule stand-in for a match originally featuring the Groove and Gas Station Islanders. That game has been rescheduled as an outdoor Winter Classic match to be played Wednesday, Feb. 18 at Hodgson Rink. As it is an exhibition match it's outcome will have no effect on the final Regular Season standings, nor on the UUHA Playoff scheduled. All 1st round Playoff game times, match-ups and locations are now up on line. If you have any difficulty viewing them try switching the Season togle to 2015 Playoffs.
The 2015 UUHA Playoffs commence at 5:00 PM on Saturday, Feb. 21 at Maple Leaf Gardens with all eight UUHA teams playing that evening. All further Playoff games will take place at Upper Canada College.
